Hi Sidney Brian
Welcome to RootsChat.

Jamaica is not the easiest place to research as you've probably found, though as late as the 1880s you may be lucky.
Have you looked at the Other Countries board?  A few enquiries there about Jamaica which might help throw light on the problem.

Good luck, from another Jamaican seeker

Hi,

This could be his marriage, the certificate would give his father's name

Cyril Herbert WAITE    Sep Q 1908     Plymouth    5b  490
names with same reference,
Charles BIRKETT
Sarah Elizabeth MANSELL
Mary Louisa I PRITCHETT

In 1911 Cyril is shown as married, it looks like he married Sarah if you look at the 1911 census.

It looks like you might be able to get some info from a Family History Center if there's one near you,

Thanks Tony
I have an LDS centre just 2 suburbs away.
My problem is that slave families (which my ancestor undoubtedly came from, at some stage) back in the 1700s weren't very well documented.  The director of the National Library in Jamaica couldn't find out anything for me, even    :D   :D   :D

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate for Cyril?

We know his birth was 08 October 1880, Kingston, from the Navy records.
I was looking at his children and I see he had a daughter Dora (b. 1914 d. 1991)

So I was wondering about Dora Wiseman, seamstress who had children in Kingston (from familysearch)
Cyril Orlando Plummer (8 Oct 1881),
Florence Maria Warnson (20 Dec 1884),
Ambrozeuo Maud Copes Wiseman (23 Apr 1890) (female)
Carlton Franklin Sexton Wiseman (14 Mar 1894) (might be the Carlton F. Sexton who arrives into NY in 1916 aged 21 claiming to be b. Cardiff)
Mourice Towers Sexton Wiseman (17 Oct 1897) (might be the Maurice Towers Sexton listed in Canadian emigration records, and/or the Maurice T. Sexton who marries in England in 1926).
