According to my copy of Martin Bloxsom's book written in 1918, The History of Gilmorton, Elizabeth Woodcock was the wife of Randolph Woodcock, the vicar of Gilmorton.

In this book Bloxsom states that Randolph Woodcock was presented to the Rectory of Gilmorton by his brother John Woodcock a citizen and haberdasher of London on 26 March 1605. He also states that Randolph Woodcock was the youngest son of Thomas Woodcock of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire.

So there you go. It needs checking but there is your link.

Bryo.

That's a great find Bryo!  :D

I think it was the casual mention of "Homes Chappell" in the will that made it appear that the place was in Leicestershire. It looks like the word "Cheshire" was simply omitted as though it went without saying that everyone knew where 'Homes Chappell" was.  ;)

Grantley, is the information about Randolph being the son of Thomas correct?

 ;D

The IGI has several Randolph Woodcocks christened in Gilmorton. One in 1616 is son of Randolphe and Elsabeth - is this your family? There is a submitted baptism for a Randolph with parents Thomas and Elizabeth in "about 1575" Gilmorton.  :P
Also another submitted record for a birth "about 1584" for a Thomas Woodcock of Church Hulme, Cheshire. His spouse is noted as Elizabeth Bolford - marriage licence: 28 June 1609 Church Hulme. Specific date for the licence so may be worth chasing up.

Thank you very much Bryo,

That is a great help.

Not only confirming the location, you have opened the doors to another generation of my ancestors. Yippee.

Wills are funny things. They go into so much detail on some matters & omit other stuff.

I have no reason to doubt that Randolph is the son of Thomas. Following this lead, Cheshire Archives list two wills of a Thomas WOODCOCK of Church Hulme – 1595 & 1636.

I haven’t yet matched up the birth death & marriage dates or checked the IGI. My first step was transcribing the Wills of Randolph WOODCOCK, his wife Elizabeth & their daughter Ellen SHUTTLEWOOD. The Wills of Randolph & Elizabeth name 12 surviving children.

Thankyou for everyone’s help.

Best Regards
Grantley
