Thanks for that Allan, the family I'm seeking lived in Stretford in 1841, Joseph Butterworth b 1806 was the head of the family and an architect he dies in 1843. Your find could well be him as this family moved about quite a lot.
My particular interest is the son Joseph Thomas Butterworth born 1837 who emigrates to Australia at some point.

Hello Dave,
Yes, this is the family, both parents die between the census of 1841and 1851. The head of the family in 1851 is shown as Luke, for reasons unknown this seems to be the William shown in the 1841 record, clearly this census. in 1851, are siblings plus servants.
Joseph Thomas Butterworth is not on subsequent census returns in England he clearly dies in Australia as his will contains reference to several of these family members which you refer to I am trying to ascertain what happened to him in the years from 1851 to his death in Geelong in 1913. I was hoping to find a Butterworth researcher in England.
Thanks for the help

Martin

Hi, don't know if you are still around. Found this posting today. Looking at Samuel Cheetham Butterworth who married Alice Kennedy, my cousin. Do you have any information about their children? Thanks, Bev in Canada

Yes Bev still alive and kicking.
Sadly not much help to you. I am not a Butterworth but researching the Fynney family. A Joseph Butterworth was involved in a ship wreak at Geelong Australia, some of the Fynney family were in the same ship and it is possible that Mr Butterworth married one of the Fynney's. This is just conjecture and I have not managed to confirm this.
I have contacted a member of the Butterworth family on your behalf and await his reply. If he wishes it then I could put you in touch with him. I don't think he is on this forum. You will need to make another post on here in order for me to send you a personal message as it is against the rules for obvious reasons  to publish personal data.
We will have to wait a few days to see if I have a response.
Welcome to RootsChat and good luck with your challenge.
