Shewan family
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 18:10 BST (UK) »
I am looking for info on Robert Shewan who married Catherine Irvine in 1851.  I know they had two children Peter b 1853  & Robina b 1854.  Catherine remarried John Hunter in 1866 so Robert would have died between 1855 & 1866.  Peter later lived in Lerwick, Liverpool and North Leith (Edinburgh) where he married Grace Hughson and raised his family.  Sadly Peter too died young in 1894, he drowned off Aberdeen in the North Sea.  I believe Robert Shewan may have died at sea.   Both men where mariners, fisherman & seaman.

Hi msh

Could this be Robina in 1861:

Agnes Priorie 86, Fishermans Wid b. St Mavin, Zetland
Robina Sheman 7, Granddaughter b. Lerwick

Address: No 6 Pitt Lane, Lerwick

There is an online tree which gives Robina's death just after this census (just four days  :'() on 11 April 1861. There is a corresponding death entry showing on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Robina's death entry would let you confirm hopefully whether her father Robert showed as alive or deceased by 1861 and let you narrow down the dates for his death.

Simarly, the original image would give you the marital status for Catherine Irvine from her 1861 census entry:

Henry Ratter 80, fisherman b. North Roe
Mary Ratter 76, wife, b. North Roe
Catharine Irvine 40, domestic servant b.North Roe
Peter Sheean 10 b. servant, Lerwick

Address: Beth, Northmaven

Thanks for the info.  Catherine's mother was a Ratter, so is definately the right family I'd say.

Monica,  I think that would be Northmavine the parish for North Roe!       Skoosh.

Yes Spelling doesn't seem to count when it comes to the census.  I have found Scotland to be very good with it's record keeping thus far but the Shetlands are proving to be a little harder.

Monica this should be my Robina as her mother death (many years later)  shows the address as 6 Pitt Lane, Lerwick, so I would say is pretty much a sure bet.  Interesting Agnes late name as I never had her marrying after her husband died (something more to check)  I will also check out the 1861 census through scotlandspeople so I can see the orginal copy.  Thanks for all the help
