a frequent traveller in 1911?
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 21:02 BST (UK) »
my great aunt is mentioned in the 1911 census, living with her parents in Irvine , Scotland!
I then found out that she married in South Africa in 1910.
she gave birth to twins in Irvine  , but sadly at 3 months they both died in August of 1911.
then I believe she sailed back to SA in September 1911.
my question is ; would she have come home for the birth of her children?, was it not expensive for such travel at that time, or may there be another explanation?
regards
Elinga

I have just been given information about a member of the extended family who emigrated to South Africa about 1885, returned to England early 1900s and paid two further visits to South Africa. Like you, I was really quite surprised by this. The man concerned was a joiner and builder, comfortably off, but not, I think, wealthy. claytonbradley
