Hursts Row & Whitwick Lane, Swannington - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 13 May 11 11:10 BST (UK) »
Hi there.

Does anyone know where Hursts Row and Whitwick Lane were in Swannington please?  These street names are stated in various census information I have but, to my knowledge, don't exist any longer.

Many thanks

Hi Helen and welcome to RootsChat

If you give us some of the census references (Piece/Folio/Page) or names and dates, we can probably find something out for you

Hi Linda.

Thanks for your reply.

Hursts Row, Swannington is listed as the birth place of Joseph Kendrick on his birth certificate in 1868.

Whitwick Lane, Swannington is listed in the 1881 England census with Thomas Kendrick being head of the household.  Refs: RG11/3142/160 page 4.

I do live in the area but no-one seems to know where the roads were.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Helen

Whitwick Lane comes under Swannington District 7 in the 1881 census

The Enumerator's route started with
8 houses in Spring Lane
about 30 houses in Whitwick Lane
Red Hills - possibly a farm
about 20 houses in Talbot Lane - mostly Colliery workers
then houses on Common
then Limby Hall
etc etc

I hope this helps you to locate it   :)

In 1871 Joseph Kendrick and his family are in Whitwick Lane, but Hursts Row is not mentioned specifically.

Greeting’s & Welcome to the Leicestershire Boards………. Helen.

For the answer to one of your questions………
If you go to the 1891 Census returns for……….

 RG 12 / 2513. / 23. / Page. 39. Keyword  Bath.

Here Thomas & Sarah are within the household of Alfred & Ann Bath
On CHURCH LANE. New Swanington

Keep this image open…..

Now if you left click on the icon. ……. “ District 8  “
which is above the green tool bar in the centre of the screen……..

The next window to  open. ….
.
Left click on the text stating………. View enumerators district
Which is to the right of District 8

Next window to open. …… .

The route which the enumerator took

Scroll down this page …….

You will see “ Including Whitwick or Church Lane New Swannington”

Therefore Whitwick Lane was renamed Church Lane……

Interesting there is a Kendrick further down the same census return
Living in “ The Elms “ … .

Regarding. ……. “ Hurst’s Row  “ …..
This usually is the way of naming a row of terraced houses
standing on a named Road or Lane….
which was named after the builder in you case. …..” Hurst “

Linda & Mike

Thank you both for your replies which have been more than helpful.

Mike - thank you for showing me how I can view the route of the enumerator.  This will be really useful.

Looking through all the info I have, I think it's safe to assume that Hursts Row would have been a row of houses on (now) Church Lane.

Coincidentally, I now live on a housing estate which is off Church Lane!

Regards

Helen
