Hi I have this couple in my family line.  Way down my great great grandmother was Christina Brough who married a Robert Dewar.  Interesting I see you also posted Aitkens.  Christina and Roberts daughter Annie Young Dewar, married a Thomas Cairns Aitken who appears to be the son of a George Aitken and Janet Cairns.  Does this tie in with you
Thanks

Hiya Sharleen,

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

The Aitken link (at the moment does not fit) I have all my Aitkens tied up and nicely parcelled back to 1803 to Thomas Aitken of Kirknewton, Midlothian.  Beyond him I have no idea  :'(  What years was the Dewar/Aitken marriage?

Unfortunately my mum no longer has the bible or I would offer to scan it, or photocopy the pages transcribed - sorry.

If it helps at all the bible was bought in a book sale in either Liverpool or Manchester.  The writing looks to have been done all at teh same time except for the pencil andteh Haig marriage.

All the best,
Pam

What a pity. I would love to have had a copy of it.

My Aitkens/Cairns were married on 8 Jul 1851 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

To my knowledge they travelled out to Brisbane Australia, in 1852 on the ship named the William and Mary.  I have found a number of children to this couple but that is really where it ends.  I would love to learn more about their family in Scotland, so if anyone knows anything about them please let me know.

From what I can see George  Aitken was born in 1828 in Broughton, Midlothian, Scotland and his parents were Robert Aitken and Isabella Borthwich.

Janet Cairns father was supposed to be Thomas Cairns and that I got from the Family Search Index.

The Dewar/Aitken relationship:

Christina Brough was born in 1848 and Died in July 31, 1878, Abernethy, Per, Scotland.  Her place of Death was Abernethy Per, Scotland.  Her children were Annie Young Dewar born  August 25, 1869 Abernethy PER, Scotland. There were also 3 other daughters, Isabella, Christina and Jean Robertson Dewar.  At some point while they were young children, they appeared to have travelled out with a uncle, to Australia and eventually settled in Mackay.

There she met and married Thomas Cairns Aitken who was later killed in what I believe was a boating accident.  She then married Edward Emmanuel Reynolds and later moved to South Africa.

That is as much as I can tell you right now.

Thanks for coming back to me though and it is a pity you did not still have the Bible.  So is life.....
