FreeBMD has this:

March qtr 1857
Wolverhampton district    vol 6b, page 409
Mitchell, Mary Elizabeth

Is this her, do you think?

Of course, it's best to find either the birth or the marriage details, where her father's name will be mentioned, but there is this from 1871 which fits the birth above:

Reference RG10, Piece 2939, Folio 135, Page 5
Wharf Street, Wolverhampton

Mitchell, James  Head  M  40  Puddler  b Wolverhampton
Mitchell, Mary  Wife  F  42
Mitchell, Emma  Daughter  F  15
Mitchell, Mary  Daughter  F  14
Mitchell, James  Son  M  9
Mitchell, Alfred  Son  M  6
Mitchell, Clara  Daughter  F  2     all born Wolverhampton

Of the 7 Mary Mitchells, born 1856-1860 in Staffordshire, on the 1871 census this is the only one born in Wolverhampton.

Hello,

Another contender for the 1857 birth is a Mary Mitchell baptised at Holy Trinity Heathtown in August, daughter of Charles, a bricklayer, and Mary. This is from Freereg.org.uk. Heathtown is in the Wolverhampton registration area.

THe 1861 reference for this family is RG9/2003 f44 page 11

It's certainly a possibility, although the original census form does say born Wednesfield Heath, and Mary E's place of birth on census returns after her marriage do state Wolverhampton?

I wouldn't discount this Mary, but more facts needed I think.

Hello

a little off subject, but the witness Sarah York may have been my great-grandmother who was married to Midian (B-1840, son of James, I believe).  Midian and Sarah immigrated to the US in the mid-to-late 1880's.  We apparently hae a lot of Midians in our ancestry.
