Murphys of Kilkenny
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 11:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Been searching for Daniel Murphy b.1814 and Honora Carty b.1816.
I believe they hailed from Kilkenny. I have no records of parents for either of them however I do know they had a son also called Daniel and he married Sarah E Dimmock b. 1855  I know that they all ended up in England and lived in Croydon, Surrey.

... i am looking for help on:

1. Their parents
2.confirmation that they did come from Kilkenny
3. How they ended up in England i.e Boat

and also photographs.

If anyone can help please mail me back!!

Thanks

Murf

very difficult to even start a search for such a common name and at such an early date without specific details - and as you may have already found out, Murphy was the most common surname in Ireland...

To start a search of parish records you first need to know the family religion and where the marriage was, or where they were born - i.e. townland, town or parish. It's also worth noting that not all parishes have records going back before the 1830s

Ireland was part of the UK at that time, so no records were kept of people travelling across the Irish Sea.

See :  Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

have you found Daniel and  Sarah on any English census returns ?

worth checking - to establish approximate year of birth for Daniel, and also to see what was entered on any of the forms for his place of birth...

Daniel Murphy was born 1845 in Croydon surrey - his wife Sarah Dimmock was born 1855 in Hertford.
They had James b. 1874, lydia b.1876 and Daniel b.1878

the 1891 census shows them living in Napier Road, South Croydon however i cannot see daniels profession clearly.....although his birthplace says 'Croydon, Surrey'

No mention of his parent Daniel and Honoria....

Thanks

I thought maybe if Daniel jnr was born in Ireland you might be able to find a clue to the his parents place of origin in Ireland from his place of birth.
