Census CDs
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 18:24 BST (UK) »
I apologise if this is a dumb question...

I'm considering purchasing a 1861 census CD (well, I'm considering asking for one as a birthday present, to be accurate!). Some of my Shropshire ancestors were from the Worthen area, which at one time was technically in Montgomeryshire.

My question is, will Worthen addresses be contained on the Shropshire CD or will I also have to buy the Montgomeryshire CD? I don't mind, I'd just like to know so that I'm buying the right thing(s) :-)

Thanks,
Helen

Hi Helen,

Some one may correct me on this but I have found that my ancestors who came from Pennerley in Worthen are not on the Shropshire or Montgomeryshire census.

It is as if a few parts of Worthen are in this big hole that has not been copied when being put to disc by the various cd retailers.

I have the 1851 shropshire and have had look ups done on the Montgomeryshire one and that area is not on either disc.
From what I can make out, the only way I will be able to get access to this is at the records office.

This does'nt help you I know  sorry. Which part of Worthen are you after??

Hi Allie,

Having failed with a look-up I posted on both the Shrops and Montg'shire boards, I had a horrible feeling this might be the case :-/

To be honest I'm not really sure which part of Worthen - I don't know the area well. It's very odd that poor old Worthen has fallen into the black hole of unrecorded census CDs!!

Don't know if this is help or hindrance :) According to the National Archives catalogue, the parish of Worthin is split over pieces 4255, 4256 and 4257 Montgomeryshire.
Might be worth contacting retailers to see if their Montgomery census contains these pieces (if indeed it's available at all).

You're welcome,

The catalogue can be searched at http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp

enter place name, year of census and reference (eg RG9 for 1861) and it will tell you the piece no. and county for that place.

Heather aka anorak :)

Just a note in case anyone reads this: according to the census CD publisher I contacted, Worthen parish (piece numbers quoted) is contained on their Montgomeryshire 1861 CD - which is fab news (well, not so fab in that I'll have to buy two CDs, but what the hey ;)) and nice to have that confirmed.
