MIELE's of Barnstaple
« on: Friday 20 May 11 09:55 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandmother was MARIA GIUSEPPA MIELE - (b.1887 Cassino, Italy) daughter of Antonio and Benadetta Miele.  Her mother and father appear to have come to the Uk in the last years of the 1890's along with Antonionos two brothers - Pasquale and Fillipo.

All were originally street organ players in the Barnstaple/North Devon area, although Antonio seems to have travelled a little further (at least to Truro).

Maria married Giachiono RAIMO in 1905 (she was 16 he was 33!).  Having one son (my G Grandfather in 1907) the family then moved to Holsworthy before Maria left the family and moved to Birmingham where she began a new life - but that's another story!

I'm trying to locate ANY ancestors of Antonio and Benadetta or of his two brothers (there was a post on here in 2006 but it seems to be dead).

Keeping my fingers crossed.....

Hopefully both!  Though I admit I MEANT descendants!

Thanks for the 1901 census extracts.

I have as much information as I'm likely to find from online resources and now hope that through the forum I can trace some DESCENDANTS who might be anle to help fill in some more...

We aren't allowed to tell you about the 1911 census (copyright & legal stuff), but you can search the index for free at www <dot> 1911census <dot> co.uk.

Or you can pay some money and see the whole thing!!
There are 23 people with surname Miele on the 1911 census.

FreeBMD <dot> org <dot> uk can be used to search Birth, Marriage and Death registrations.

So there's still plenty online for you to look at.

And another rule here is that we can't mention people who are potentially living.

Thanks for your help.

Although I have only just joined this formum, I'm pretty experienced in whats available and have already used the 1911 census as well as alien registers etc - online sources and original primary sources.

Maria died in 1958 so we're ok with the privacy bit too.

Thanks again

Although this doesn't in fact help with your search for descendants, I wondered if you had seen this?

http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/findfamily.php?name=Miele.

There are some images fof  gravestones for some of the people you have mentioned. You just email to obtain a copy. This is a free service.

Good luck with your search

Hi there

I've been researching this Miele family for some friends of ours. Their branch is descended from Antonio and Benadetta Miele via their daughter Teresa (born 1902).

I thought I had got as far as I can by means of the normal records/websites but your snippets here and on your other post expanded the bits about Maria Guiseppa MIELE / Giachiono RAIMO / Salvatore TRESIGNI (I think this should be TERSIGNI?) which I had only sketched. Presumably you know that Antonio and Benedetta also moved to Birmingham between 1911 and 1921 (when he died).

One bit of your tree I think I can improve... Maria Guiseppa was born I think to a previous wife of Antonio. He only married Benadetta (in Italy?) in 1901 (the 1911 census says that the marriage was only 10 years old, but they were married in the 1901 census, and there were only two children from that marriage, not four).

Anyway, PM me if you want to compare notes on Antonio and his brothers.

Best wishes,

Colin

Hi,

My name is Richard. My father was Anthony Miele and he was the son of Salvatore Miele. Antonio and Benedetta Miele were my great grandparents. Salvatore was the younger brother of Teresa and Maria. Hopefully you might still read this forum and contact.
My uncle is planning to travel back to Cassino at easter 2013 to meet the remainder of the ancestors. Might be nice to catch up.
