McGregor, McLaren, McKerrachers
« on: Friday 20 May 11 11:46 BST (UK) »

Greetings from Canada,  i am excited that I will be in Perthshire next month and I'm hoping for info as to following.  Had some contact with forum member a couple of years ago re: my McLaren, McGregor & McKerrachers on Kirk Lane 1814 census.

Re: Kirk Lane graveyard   anyone know if Alexander McGregor (1766-1837) & Janet McGregor and their son John McGregor (1803-1886) & Marion Robertson are buried there?

Re:  Balquidder or Glen Lyon area  Is there a local family history centre in either place?

Thanks,  Jan

This would be Kirk Lane and the parish is Kincardine; the census is the Moss census of 1814.

Nearest village was Thornhill or Norrieston (now both in Stirlingshire due to boundaries change)

I visited the graveyard recently and many of the earlier stones are illegible.  There is a book of MI for most of the church and graveyards locally.

Kirk Lane is between 19 - 20 miles from Balquidder.  Glen Lyon (further north again) through Killin heading for Fortingall or Pitlochry perhaps as much as 45 miles from Kirk Lane.

As far as I'm aware there are no graveyards actually in Kirk Lane (might be wrong) but you are best to check with monks09 a Rootschat member who would be able to help more with local graveyards.

The McGregors were more clan based at Balquidder (Rob Roy's grave is nearby).

Hi annejan.
There is a graveyard at Blairdrummond on the A84 not far from Kirklane but i would also check New Kilmadock near Doune.
Could one of your McKerracher decendants  be the late Archie McKerracher local historian and writer?  Check  out for  book Pertshire in History and Legend by him.

Kincardine in Menteith (Blairdrummond)  graveyard.

  No: 117       Alexander McGregor
                   died 25.6.1837 age 73.
                     Janet McGregor
                   died 20.10.1845 age 82.

 Hope this is some help.

Thanks Kenny,  Is 117 a help in finding a gravestone?

I'm also looking for burial of Peter McLaren and daughter Isabella. Died at Doune within 5 months of each other.  She Dec. 1855 and he May 1866. Registration says buried in Kincardine Cemetary but maybe Kilmadock?  Will try to stop off there.
Just to add to the list:   Peter's parents  Alexander McLaren and Janet Fergusson
His wife's parents  Duncan McLaren and Isobel McGregor (Alexander & Janet are her parents)

Thanks again. I"m very greatful for the help. Is great to have someone "on the ground" ahead of arrival.     Jan

Hi Again Kenny,  I meant to say that I wondered about Archie McKerracher and have read some article by him. My Mc Kerrachers originally came from Glen Lyon and I believe he did too.  Haven't been able to find any bio of him to check.

Is there a pattern for your knitted hat?  Its great!    Jan

Hi Jan,
I am interested in your McKerracher connection as I am also researching McKerrachers from Glen Lyon. I know from looking at records that there were a lot of McKerrachers in that area but if you can give me a few details of the names you are researching we can see if they connect in any way.

I am actually wearing one of the original costumes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
We were having pictures done for postcards to raise money for local Historical Society  ;D
