James CEELY
« on: Monday 23 May 11 12:29 BST (UK) »
G'day Chatters,

I am seeking the birth of one James CEELY about 1819/20 and said to be in Charlton or thereabouts.

It is also thought that his father was called Robert and was a Farrier.

Regards
Wal rr

Hi Wal rr,
I have tried to find a Christening without any luck.
Hopefully someone else has access to better Records than me.

I noticed on Family Trees that he was in Australia by abt 1852 where he Married.
The trouble is the one quoted as born c 1819, Charlton, Kent, in 1851 Census is down as Married. He is a Seaman and visiting in Sheffield, Yorks.
HO107/2339/461/16

Marriage form FreeBMD;
James CEELY, Sept 1838, Hull, 22 313
Possible Spouses;
Hannah HASSEY
Fanny CAMPBELL
Elizabeth COCKBURN
Ann WILSON

1851 Census, Sheffield, Yorks
James CEELY,
1851 Census
Hamilton Court, Spencer St,
Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire
HO107/2363/289/15
Hannah CEELEY, 21, Wife, Mar, Seamans Wife, born Newbald, East Yorkshire
Clara Ann, 1, Daug, Seamans Daug, born Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire
Sarah Jane, 3mths, Daug, Seamans Daug, born Kingston upon Hull

1861 Hannah is down as a Widow but has a Boy aged 2 plus Clara and Sarah with her.
RG9/3585/86/16

So not sure what to say here.
Was he Married and then left her and went to Australia?

Trish :)

G'day Trish,

Many, many thanks for your prompt response, and we have corresponded before.

It would appear that James made his way to Australia in 1853 and deserted ship and teemed up with a lady who is thought bto have been on the same vessel.

No record has been located of a marriage between James and his new partner at this point.

The 1861 census record referring to Hannah as a Widow is probably correct because of a law I believe that was in existence at the time which referred to a separation for 7 years as being a kind of annulment or death or over the seas or some such situation. Over the seas James certainly was.

It would be nice now locate a birth or Christian so as to go further back in time.

Thanks again Trish

Regards
Wal rr

Now this might be Robert, down as Roth Ceely, image is Robt There is no occp for Robert but next to Jane is what I think is Farrier or Farmer.

Hi Wal,
Good to hear from you again.
Did he partner with Isabella Gardiner?
So Trees have them marrying in Victoria.
Did he die NSW or Victoria?
Are there 2 James Ceeleys?

Trish,
Nice talking to you again and thanks for your great replies.

Yes lass he "partnered" Elizabeth GARDNER/GARDINER and they both died within a year of each other 1895 and 1896 in the Narrandera district of NSW.

Yes I believe trees have them marrying in Victoria but to date no evidence of this has come to pass.

We have one and the same James CEELY it would appear.

Could you look up for a marriage between a Robert CEELY and a Jane please if possible.

Also the births of Sophia and Elizabeth probably in Kent.

Many thanks
Wal rr

As requested;
James CEELEY, 31, Visitor, Mar, Seaman, born Charlton, Kent

Now Sophia Married William John CLARKE in 1843,
Reg March 1843, Bloomsbury, 1 62

Anc London info had the Marriage and her Christening but my Sub does not allow me to access it ::)

Christenings IGI Extracted
CEELEY to ROBERT/JANE, St Bride, Fleet St, London;
JANE SARAH Ceely 02 August 1815
ROBERT BEVAN Ceely 31 March 1818
SOPHIA CALE Ceely 01 March 1820
WILLIAM STANARD Ceely 16 April 1822
ELIZABETH Ceely 21 April 1824
HENRY HEWLITT Ceely 08 November 1826
EMMA Ceely 03 April 1836 (may have died as does as not on 1841 Census)

If this is the correct Parents for James c 1819 he would just fit in!
