*Completed*1871 census Irish *Ferris* family in South Wales?
« on: Monday 23 May 11 13:13 BST (UK) »
My first ever foray into Wales, I haven't a clue about anything Welsh so be gentle please!  :-*

My gt grandfather John Ferris enlisted as a Royal Marine in Merthyr 28 January 1873 per his service record history, but he was born in Killarney, Co Kerry, Ireland and Roman Catholic in 1854.

His father was also named John Ferris (a ferryman on John jnr marriage cert 1877) and I'm hoping the whole family might be in South Wales at the time he signed up.  There's no mother's name known BUT a possibility is Ellen as his 2nd daughter was given that name.

Could someone do a look up for them on the 1871 census please?
Ireland, Co Antrim: Kerr; Hollinger; Forsythe; Moore
Ireland, Co Louth: Carson; Leslie
Ireland, Co Kerry: Ferris
Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

Yes I have that Nanny Jan but it doesn't show on his service record (perhaps different because he then joined the Royal Marines)  there was another John Ferris about the same time.

Hmm interesting

I have a marriage on FreeBMD of John Ferris to Bridget McCarthy in Merthyr in 1869.  Which ties in to the census names.

No children to that marriage that I can see but Bridget @ 47 yo in 1871 that's understandable.  That would hint at an earlier or previous marriage for John.

I think this rules this family out

FreeBMD deaths June Q 1868 Merthyr T

Catherine Ferris 31yo
John Ferris 0 yo

So obviously a death in childbirth and another John which is unlikely.

Hey Ho back to Irish records.  :'(
