James Phelan marriage 1885?
« on: Monday 23 May 11 15:58 BST (UK) »
I am researching the life of James Leo Phelan (1895-1966) Writer / Actor / Broadcaster / Tramp. He was born in Dublin in 1895 and his parents were James Phelan (1850-1916) and Catherine (either Collins or O'Reilly) (1858-????). So I am looking for the wedding of James & Catherine which took place around 1885. James was from Tipperary, Catherine from Westmeath and they lived in Dublin from at least 1890 when their daughter Mary was born there. Any information welcome. Thanks. Jim Phelan

No wedding I'm afraid, but the Killenaule (Tipperary) Births Register has the following James, born 1850:-

No. 22
May 1850
James Phelan son of Patrick Phelan and Mary Fitzgerald

Cheers

Sorry to butt in here but I read these exchanges with interest although I have nothing new to contribute. However I am researching William James Phelan (born 1847/8)(my gt grandfather) who was a reporter with The Nation newspaper until his departure for Natal, South Africa in 1869 where he had a career as a successful and fiery Editor of various newspapers before his early death in 1886. I see similarities in the names (William/James), literary leanings and political activity and wonder if there is a family connection in the past which might be of help to me in tracing the parentage and place of birth of my gt grandfather in Ireland. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
