ellin roberts, buired in saint machreth !
« on: Friday 27 May 11 08:56 BST (UK) »
I have just come across a sad piece of work that i need to re shearch for my family history course with aberystwyth university. On the head stone it reads that she is 10 years old and buried with what i think says "her" son Hugh ei baban. it gives her father as Rolant and mother Elizabeth. On Ellin's death certificate dated 5th march 1873, it gives unknown not certified under the cause of death, there is also no mention of the baby Hugh. I have looked on the find my past web site and found the family on the 1871 census it gives Rowland as a farmer and grocer yet on the death certificate for Ellin it says slate quarrier, I wonder if I'm on the right family? I have found an Elizabeth Ellis who married Rowland Roberts in 1856, if anybody can give me any help I would be most grateful.

If Ellin died at 10yrs old in 1873 - she was too young to have had a son at that time so could Hugh be a sibling perhaps

It's quite a big change of occupation in a 2yr span so I wonder if you have the right 1871 family

Have you followed that family through to the 1881 census to check?

Hi Rachel

If you check the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses to compare them and other household members, it appears that Rowland & Elizabeth are the same couple.
1861

Rowland Roberts, 29, farmer, born Llanuwllyn
Elizabeth Roberts, 38, born Llanfachreth, Merionethshire
Margt Roberts, 4, born Dolgelly
Robert Roberts, 1, born Llanwchllyn
1871
RG10/Piece5689/Folio87/Page1
Rowland Roberts, 40, farmer, born Merionethshire
Elizabeth Roberts, 53, born Merionethshire
Margaret Roberts, 14
Robert Roberts 11
Ellenor Roberts, 9
John Roberts, 7
1881
RG11/Piece5551/Folio67/Page1
Rowland Roberts, 46, Quarryman, born Llanuwchllyn
Elizabeth Roberts, 52, born Llanfachreth, Denbighshire

Margaret Roberts, 24

Hope this helps

HI hiraeth,
Thanks very much for looking at the census for me, this story has really got me wondering, could a 10 year old really have had a baby and why no clue as to her death. I have looked at the address on the death certificate, Friog, Llangelynin and the place where she is buried Llanfachreth, if you travelled by car today it would be 17 miles and take 31 Min's. I wonder if there is so connection with the church. Also on the death certificate the informant is Rees Thomas Jones who is present at the death at Friog, Llangelynin, have you come across his name in any other searches.

Thanks yet again.

Hi Rachel

Have you tried to locate a baptism for Ellin  &/or birth certificate for the baby Hugh Roberts?    It is much more likely that he was not born to Ellin.  Given the age of her mother, Elizabeth, perhaps he was the illegitimate child of older sister Margaret?  or the burial inscription was incorrect?    Are there other Ellis family members such as grandparents buried at Llanfachreth?

There is a Rees Jones age 21, son of Thomas Jones, grocer & farmer, residing at Llangelynin in 1871 (RG10/Piece5689/Folio78/Page8)

Rachel,

Have you got a digital photo of the gravestone that you could post on here? On your original post you said "I think" it states "ei baban".

Hi Hiraeth,

The only thing I have come across up to now is maybe the marriage of Roland and Elizabeth Ellis in 1856. I will need to go to the library tomorrow to look up on find my past as I am not yet signed up to any fee paying sites. I have also found a census for 1851 RG number:HO107, Folio:487 page:5 Enumeration District:5A it has an Elizabeth Ellis as a servant unmarried, age 35. I am just about to look at the place on a map to see if it is close to any of the places mentioned.

Don't let me keep you up too late, I'm a bit of a novice and I could be looking up the wrong tree  ???

Another thought - check the headstone. Does it read "Hugh ei baban". or "Hugh eu baban" ?
