Hi Rachel,
Yes, you are correct, ei means "hers", eu means "theirs". I'll have a look at the Flickr site. I haven't looked at it before.

Found it on Flickr. It appears that others have seen this and added their comments. As a research student, you have a number of avenues to explore. (I'd be very interested in your findings.)

For example:

1) I don't think it was a legal requirement to register a birth prior to 1874, so could a stillbirth be unregistered? Likewise, what were the rules regarding a death?
2) Was there a local newspaper covering this area? Might be worth a look.

I don't think I'm being much help her - just thinking aloud!!

There is an extracted record on the IGI for an Elizabeth Ellis baptism at Llanfechreth Jan 1, 1823, d/o Hugh Ellis and Mary :)

There is a birth of a Hugh Roberts in the March quarter 1873 at Dolgelly.  The GRO reference is vol 11b page 419 but I would be much more inclined to request the certificate from the local registrar - explaining the problem with possible identification using the census addresses and all the family names. ;)

The baby Hugh may have been buried by the family at a later date.   There are a couple of deaths of baby Hugh Roberts that could fit - Sep Q 1874 age 1, and Dec Q 1875 age 2 both at Dolgelly.

If you look at the NorthWalesBMD website, you should find the birth you found on GRO. This will also give you details of the relevant local registrar's office. They are usually very helpful if you phone them, quoting the relevant reference number.

Good night and good luck.

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75

Registration only applied to living births - even if the child only took a few breaths and then died.  There was no registration facility for stillbirths and no requirement for the usual documentation before a burial could take place

Looking at the earlier comments that Hugh may have been the illegitimate child of an older daughter rather than Ellin's.  Pure theory - but could it have been a "sneaky" way of the family to deflect that fact away from the living daughter?

There is a death for Ellen Roberts age 10 in Dolgellau in 1873, which matches that of Ellin.

Also, there is a tree on Ancestry.com which lists Hugh 1873-1873 as her brother, the son of Rowland Roberts and Elizabeth Ellis.
Although the inscription is clear on the picture, perhaps ei was meant to be eu. If Robert and Elizabeth were unable to read, they may not have realised.

Regards,
David
