Bute Arms-Pontlottyn
« on: Sunday 29 May 11 11:25 BST (UK) »
I wonder do we have any members from Pontlottyn?  I am looking for information on a public house namely the Bute Arms which I am led to believe was in Bute Terrace, Pontlottyn in the 1890s.

Any info would be appreciated

Regards, Roy

Hello Roy,

I asked around about this last night and wrote down some notes. I'm assuming this is accurate.

In old Pontlottyn, there was an area called Sodom and Gomorrah.  Gomorrah was Chapel Street and Bute Terrace was called Sodom.  The pub in Sodom was called the Bute.  Bute terrace may have been knocked down because of a TB outbreak.  Both areas are now no longer there.  I'm told that the street looked somewhat like one side of the main row in Butetown, just a couple of miles up the new road.  There was also a place called the Rock Hotel off a fork near these places.  I may have some old video\photographs of the area.  I also have a lot of more recent shots of the valley including Pontlottyn, Butetown, Tirphil, Brithdir etc.

Regards

Hello
I remember Bute Terrace- Sodom, really well. Some of my relations lived there and I used to visit them. One thing that I remember was going to the toilet which was situated across the road and up the hill a bit.  There you would have to "fight" with the sheep or the horses to get to the loo!! I know that some if not all the houses had cellars and my aunties was nearly full of water.
One of my relations for Bute Terrace used to frequent the Lord Nelson in Pontlottyn.

All my fathers side of the family came from Pontlottyn.
My mothers side came from Rhymney and I was actually born in Lady Tyler Terrace Rhymney
Cheers, Avril :) :)

Hi Avril
My mother's maiden name was Brewer and they were Rhymney and Pontlottyn folk; ever heard of them?
