Hi Alan,

My Stanners family is a bit complicated in that Margaret Stanners married James Finlay Stanners Bell.

The Stanners line that I know most about  Is Margaret's parents, Thomas Stanners and Christina McCallum. They had 7 children and lost 3 sons in WW1. Another son emigrated to America. They originally lived around the Carriden/ Grangepans area I think.

Thomas's parents were Gilbert and Janet  williamson.

It becomes quite difficult to separate the 2 Stanners families when looking at the records!

Also not sure if they were all in fact distantly related!

Would be interested if you have any information!

Regards,
Meggy

Let's concentrate on one area at a time.

I have a number of "(name) Finlay Stanners" in my tree with ancestors Walter Stanners (1806-1874) and Margaret Finlay (1816-?).

Do you have James Finlay Stanners Bell's parents?

Hi Meggy

I can see there has not been any posts for some years but, if you still have the book to hand, could you check out by late father-in-law who served in WW2. His name was Richmond Picken Sellar and dependent on which year he enlisted, his address would have been either Main St., Castle Loan or Birkhill Crescent, all Bo'ness.
There is a link with one of the Bell families - he married Henrietta Ramsay Bell in 1941.

I've got the book handy.

The entry reads:

SELLARS, RICHMOND P., 32 Castleloan. King's Own Royal Regt. No. 5260156. Joined, November 1941.

Was he related to Richmond Picken, Merchant Navy, who was killed in WW2 and appears on the Bo'ness War Memorial?

Hi Jock

Thanks for the prompt reply, even though I addressed you as Meggy! Dick (Richmond) never really spoke about his time in the army during WW2 so that fills in a gap in the family tree. Interesting that even official documents wrongly spell his name as Sellars rather than Sellar. He was regularly called Dick Sellars in Bo'ness.

The Richmond Picken on the War Memorial would have been Dick's uncle, whose ship was torpedoed in 1942. All other records relating to him call him Richard Picken but that is common in my wife's family tree. For example his father, Richmond Picken, (1869 - 1944), is variously called Richard and  Richmond on official records throughout his life. Richmond is a common Christian name on that side of the family dating back to 1800.

Thanks again for the info.

Regards

Alan C
