Innholders of Stilton
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 09:52 BST (UK) »
In 1798, my 5 x great aunt, Elizabeth Thorpe, married John Gibbs, widower, who is described as an Innholder of Stilton, Huntingdonshire. The marriage took place in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire.

I was wondering if there might be a list of Inns and Innkeepers/holders in Stilton for that period?

Regards,
David

The only other possible (of places still there today) is the Talbot
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/13/13803/Talbot_Inn/Stilton

http://www.charleswells.co.uk/home/pub-guide/pub/talbot

Might be worth contacting them to see if they have any Archives with lists of prevous landlords

but of course John Gibbs's Inn might not have survived.

If you search Google Books, there are mentions of John Gibbs being the landlord of the Bell Inn, Stilton.  He apparently sold it to Mrs Scarborough in 1814.  Looking at the London Gazette archive, you'll see that John Gibbs became bankrupt in 1814, hence the sale no doubt.

Hope this is useful.

Thank you very much for the links.

I had searched Google Books, having previously found the death notice for Elizabeth's father in The Gentleman's Magazine, but must not have been very thorough. Adding the Bell Inn to the search criteria brought up the answer.
I also found another marriage of interest. On one link, the next entry after John and Elizabeth is for Francis Mawbey of Market Deeping to Miss Gibbs at Stilton. Francis Mawbey signed the Marriage bond for John Gibbs. Miss Gibbs could be John's sister but I can't find her first name.

The London Gazette link is most useful and I have already found other family links - some good and some bad: i.e. more bankruptcies.

My wife has taken a sudden liking to Stilton Cheese, recently having visited one of the farms that supplies the milk. We will have to visit the Bell Inn.

Again, many thanks,

Regards,
David

Many thanks for the marriage details.

I am certain that John and Ann were siblings, children of John Gibbs and Jane Woodall, of Market Deeping.

A strange coincidence but I took a picture of their parents' grave in 2009, without realising that there might be a family link, mainly because it was the only legible pre 1800 stone.

It sounds as thought Ann went to live with her brother in Stilton after her father died in 1793, her mother having died in 1779.

Regards,
David
