"The Star" pub photo .... Jack the Ripper connection
« on: Thursday 28 April 05 11:34 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Some of my ancestors run/owned a pub called "The Star" in Morris Street, Stepney from 1894-1915ish.   You could see the pub from the front door of where I was born and it's been an odd part of my family over the years. My Mum and Dad used to tell stories about drinking there - a Pint and Port & Lemon I think  :D - and the 'colourful' clientele (transvestites, local gangsters, illegal gambling).  My Mum unable to afford stockings with a Bisto line painted up the back of her legs.  I think the pub 'disappeared' in the 1950s, but not sure ....

Anyway, according to what I've found on the net, Elizabeth Stride, one of the victims, lived in the next street and drank at The Star.  Martha Tabram, another suspected Ripper victim lived on Star Street and also drank at The Star.

I'm really interested in getting a photo - you would imagine there would be one since it is famous by association.  I've been in contact with my local archives, no luck.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

The East of London Family History Society covers Stepney and they have a 'willing to help' list here http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/help/eolhelp1.htm

Or you could try the British Library http://www.bl.uk/

I have also found a listing for another pub in Morris Street - there is always the possibility that the name was changed http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25301/

And a local archive - Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives, 277 Bancroft Road E1 4DQ. Tel: 020 7364 1290 - but this may be the one you have tried already?

Or.... how about the London Dungeon, I recall seeing a Jack the Ripper exhibit there a few years ago, they may have something tucked away.

Just a couple of ideas - good luck and post the pic if you find one.

Cheers.

Hi

Thanks for those suggestions.  I did email the Tower Hamlets archives and they did a search without success, but perhaps a trip there would be a good idea.  I've got lots of other stuff to look up there while I'm at it so it should be fruitful one way or another.

Cheers

Hallo Jonathan, the London Metropolitan Archive has a pretty large catalogue of old-time London photos.

By the way...since I am new here, I am wondering if someone could give me some advice on where to place a post I have in question.

I am a Ripperologist in Philadelphia who for  financial and distance reasons, cannot get to Hull or Sculcoates to do the necessary research I need for my work...

I have been trying to find out where I could find material on a Robert Stephenson [ born 20/4/1841, Sculcoates,Hull ] whom I believe was Jack The Ripper.

In trying to find his medical records to verify if and when Stephenson [also referred to as Roslyn D'onston ] contracted venereal disease [ most likely in either 1867-1868], I've run into a wall,so to speak....I know that IF he did get a venereal disease, that it was attended to by a local doctor in the Hull/Sculcoates area......Is there any way to find out where I could look for this material either here on anyone's travels ?

Sorry to take up your time....and thanks

Hi Howard and welcome to Rootschat!

Thanks for that info - I'll check that out.

Regarding your own question - I'm afraid that is beyond my knowledge but I would initiate a New Topic with an appropriate descriptive subject heading, probably in The Common Room would be a good location.

Good luck

Thanks for that Annie, now at least I know where to get a good pint!

I happened to go to my local archives this morning.  No luck with the photo (though got some others of streets where my families lived and some great Ordnance Survey maps from 1873 and 1923 with houses marked with numbers etc - yay!)  but found out from the Land Tax registry that it was a Courage pub, so have sent off a tentative email to the brewery asking if they have any info.  Fingers crossed.

Cheers  ;D
