I am trying to confirm the details of the birth of George Arthur Larkcom Butcher.  I have a copy of his birth certificate from the GRO, that shows his date of birth as ??/05/1851 in Brightwell (sub-district of Cholsey). The FreeBMD website reference is ‘Jun 1851 Wallingford 6 270’ but this shows his surname as Bulcher.

 On the birth certificate, the box for the father’s surname has the number ‘5’ in it and the GRO say that this relates to an illegible note which has been added to the left of column 1.  I’m hoping that this note appears on the original register entry and is readable.

 Thanks

 Hi Harry,

 Thanks for your really quick reply. I wasn’t sure whether my request would come under the Berkshire or Oxfordshire forum as the county is shown as ‘Berks and Oxford’ on the certificate.
 Do you think that there could be a separate record of the actual birth of George in May 1851 either as Butcher or Bulcher, perhaps in another parish?

   Thanks again

In 1861, 9 year old George appears to be with his grandparents Lawrence and Ann in Brightwell Wallingford.

In 1851 Harriet is their 20 year old unm dau ,and obviously very pregnant  ;D

H0107/1690 folio 184 page 33

Lawrence Butcher head 50 blacksmith b South Moreton Berks
Ann Butcher wife 49 b Aldworth Berks
Harriet Butcher dau 20 unm b Moulsford Berks
William Butcher son 5 b Brightwell
Ann Butcher dau 8 b Brightwell

There will only be one registration of his birth,and presumably only one baptism too.
The Larkcom in his name may be a clue as to who his dad was?

 Hi Carol,

 Thank you for your reply.

 In 1870 George Butcher married Ruth Griffin in Wallingford both aged 19. The certificate shows George’s father as Lawrence Butcher who I think is in fact his grandfather. I haven’t applied for it yet, but the FReeBMD has a reference for the death of Harriet Butcher in Wallingford dated Sept 1854, so maybe Lawrence brought George up as his son? This was why I was interested to see if there was any note made on the parish record of his birth.
 Thanks for mentioning that the name Larkcom could be a clue to the real father because looking in the 1851 and 1861 censuses I’ve found that this is the surname of a couple of families in the area so it will be something to check out.

  Thanks again

Hi Mallory,

Just to add;
Moulsford PRs (ex OFHS);
Baptism
22-1-1832 Harriett d/o Lawrence & Ann BUTCHER, Moulsford. Blacksmith.
This ties in with the age in the census and at death.

If Harriet died so young then I think it's pretty certain that George was brought up by his grandparents,Lawrence and Ann.

They had other fairly young children at home,so he may not even have known who his real mum was.
