Burial at Peterborough Cathedral
« on: Sunday 05 June 11 22:02 BST (UK) »
After a visit to Peterborough Cathedral, ive found the final resting place of one of my ancestors, George Langton. The burial slab is in latin, and just wondering if anyone can translate it for me.

I also asked at Peterborough Cathedral if they had any records there to explain why he was interred inside the cathedral with a huge slab on the floor. He must have had money to have this done, but they said they didnt know.

Can anyone offer any reasons why he would be buried at this site?

Deposited ie Buried George Langton of Langton, county of Lincoln, Armiger, who died 21 February in the year of redemption 1695 aged 79

An armiger was someone entitled to bear a coat of arms, so he wasn't your average peasant

Hi,

It seems George Langton may have owned the Oxcombe Estate at one time.  See the link below (not sure if this is your web page!).  If not, hope itīs useful.

Not your average peasant eh? Thats good news. None of the money ever came this way  :)

Also that website is great, it trace Langtons back to around 1200. Fantastic news!

Hello, Joel here. I run the lostlangtons site along with my father, David.

Im pleased to see you found the site and found it useful.

I have known that George was buried here for some time, but i hadnt seen it before. Its more elaborate than i expected.
I still dont know why he was buried in Peterborough. It seems odd to me, because George took a massive mortgage in order to buy the Langton lordship and estate from his cousin. So he certainly was entitled to bare arms - the main arms of the lincolnshire family. I wonder if there is some shield in Peterborough cathedral or elsewhere of his?

Here is an article about how he got the estate: http://www.lostlangtons.co.uk/ManorandEstateLBS.shtml

and here is an article about the coat of arms for the Lincolnshire line: http://www.lostlangtons.co.uk/LincolnshireCOA.shtml

I would love to find out what he was doing in Peterborough. He must have owned some land there too. His son George inherited and kept a series of diaries, which have been published by David Hamilton - very interesting.

Another son og George Sn, was William who also died in Peterborough, as did at least one of Williams children.

Best
Joel

Many thanks Joel. Has made for some fantastic reading.

Are the diaries available to view online or can they be purchased in book form?

Many thanks.
David.

They are available to buy as a book. It is mainly transcriptions from three of his seven known diaries. David Hamilton is working on the other four that he has uncovered, but we have to be patient as it is alot of work.

I found my copy on Amazon, but had to check for several months before it came up for sale, as it is out of print.

How are you descended from George?

Best
