I just wanted to quickly post a message just to say thank you to all of you.  I am amazed by how helpful and generous everyone has been on this forum.  I will start working through the ideas once my 2 year old is in bed!!  I will let you know the outcome.  :)

Have you tried the Ryerson Indexes, or Trove Australia.  Trove is particularly good for Newspaper obits!  And much more!

Not on Ryerson, but the West Australian is only indexed back to 2011 at the moment.
However, the OP says they have already looked 'for a month after his death' so there may have been nobody to put a notice in for him.
