1801 Census
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 16:46 BST (UK) »
Just found out that there was an 1801 Census. Is it comprehensive, has anyone used it before, is it even available, and if so where can it be accessed?

Go to http://www.histpop.org.uk/pre41/listings_a.pdf which gives the details of the 1801, 1821, 1831 censuses This site does not seem to be available.
There is the History of the Census http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dr8/

There is also "Pre-1841 Censuses and Population Listings in the British Isles" [Paperback] by Colin Chapman

Thanks Stan. The link doesn't work unfortunately, but I'll google and have a look at that book.

The censuses before 1841 weren't much use for genealogy purposes.  They are often just headcounts, though some do give surnames of householders.  Not all have survived, but where they do, they are kept at the relevant county archives.

If you google the place/county you want with "1801 census" you might find some useful snippets.
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

In Appendix II in the book, Chapman lists the existing returns and marks with an * those which have all persons named, often with ages. He adds that to locate the custodian of the returns contact the archivist for the county or region concerned. If you say what area you are interested in I can see what is available. It is a great pity that the histpop file is no longer available as it was a comprehensive listing.

That's very kind of you, Stan. The areas I am interested in are Boxgrove, West Sussex and London. To be more specific with the latter, perhaps the Newgate area.

The only 1801 ones for Sussex are Hurstpierpoint, Kirdford*, and Ticehurst. For Middlesex they are Chelsea St.Luke, Chiswick, Hampstead, Hendon, St. James Piccadilly, St. Margaret (few names), and St. Mary le Strand.
