lookup request "Jay"
« on: Friday 29 April 05 09:15 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace a "William Jay" on the 1851 census. I believe he was born in 1799 somewhere on the border between Wilts and Dorset. Could someone please look it up for me in the 1851 census, I am pretty sure I have a record of his death in Jan 1861 aged 61 so he doesn't appear on the 1861 census, there is however a William Jay born in Tisbury in 1799 that lived until he was 80. Any info from any census pre 1861 would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Kev Jay

Hi Kevin.....i had a look on Ancestry to see what was there and found three different bits of info that you already prob had.

William Jay died 1879 in Wilton Wiltshire 5a 169 died at age 80

William Jay b 1799 in Fovant Wilts still living in the 1871 census alone but in 1861 living with wife Hannah

William Jay b 1802 Wimbourne Dorset area of Canford still living in 1871 with wife Sarah and daughter Emily

As you indicated there maybe a Wiltshire connection i checked the 1841 census for Fovant and found.....

Thanks ever so much for both replies,  Nell has found the one I was after, the one in church st Salisbury st Edmunds in the one, he is my Great Great Great Grandfather, I have been unable to find out any other information other than his marriage to Ann Brickell. I am sorry, I gave everyone a bit of duff information, the William who lived until he was 80 was from Fovant, (the one both of you found!)not tisbury as I stated. sorry! If anyone finds any other information about the one from Tisbury. I would be extremely gratefull, I guess the next step is to try and find the birth records for C1799 for Tisbury. Thanks again for everyone who looked.
 :)

Kev

Hi again,
I was wondering if anybody out there with any census before 1851 could do me a favor. I am trying to find if  there is a William Jay(born in Tisbury, married to Ann) in the 1841 or before census for Salisbury St Edmunds. I know they moved from Shaftesbury sometime after 1825 when they got married.

Best Regards to all

Kev

Great,
Thanks Alli, I guess it doesn't specify where William (40yrs) was born, does it?
I know the 1851 census shows "Tisbury", but this is the only record of him being from there, and there is no birth record for him that I can find in Tisbury. But thanks again for the info, it is much appreciated
Best Regards

Thanks again Alli,
It is a bit of a pain that there are two William Jays born in 1799 very close to each other, I sometimes wish my relative was the one from Fovant, as I can find lits of info on him!!!
