James Sheppard 1860/1 Brighton
« on: Monday 20 June 11 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hello
I keep ending up in Sussex. This time I am on the scrounge for a James Sheppard (of different spellings).

According to the 1901 census, and if I have the right James, the 1881 census, he was born 1860/1 in Brighton. His father was also James but I can't read his occupation (but looks like gentleman) on son James'  2nd marriage in 1900 in Deptford.

I think James jun's  first wife was Mary Jane Hallett but I don't have the certificate to prove he is the same as on the 1881 with 2 children. In 1901 neither of them were with him or his new wife, Ellen Mary Dack.

I think one (Florence 1879 ) died in Brighton in 1882. Her sister Nellie 1880 I cannot positively identify but may be living with an uncle. Montague Blundell. I also think that James' first wife, Mary  Jane, died in 1890 in St Olave Reg Dist. the next district to where he remarried. He was a smith.

Now that I have finished waffling, is anyone able to look up the 1871 census for him so that I can identify his parents. Or the 1891 in case dau Nellie is still with him at that point. family search has nothing on him that I could find as positive. I have him in 1911.  Thanks
Yours

Hello Omega,
I don't know but looks very promising.  And it is a start which I didn't have before. Thank you.

Hello Suzard,
Thank you. Looks like two Sheppards  to unwind. The 1891 definitely looks like him.

A lathe renderer is what we call a plasterer. In earlier times they were called pargeters, hence the occupational surname. - Knowall!

I have now found dau  Nellie Sheppard's  uncle and aunt in 1891 with her as neice on Freecen and on FreeBMD her aunt looks very much like to be her mother's sister, Ann Hallett, daus of Thomas and Harriet.

So James got his sister-in-law to bring up his daughter and then remarried. I know it happened many, many, times, but for some reason it still makes me uncomfortable.  His second wife was my great- grandaunt.
I am now going to get a magnifying glass and see if I can decipher what James said was his father's occupation on his marriage cert.
