John, SP is an addictive resource! I think it is the fact that you can view in many cases things instantly...you sort of forget you are burning through units (money!). A fantastic resource though for Scottish research.

A couple of things for you to consider.

The searches are very rigid in respect of spellings. Given how much variation there can be in spellings, specially the further back you go, you need to use the SP wildcard of '*' if you don't find what you are looking for on the results. For example, you may find that Whyte may show as White on some registrations, so you could search for Wh*te.

Searching for deaths of married women (thinking here of your grandmother) is normally made easier because you can search with both the married and maiden surnames, to help you narrow down results.

Make allowances for reporting on ages - +/- 3 years (more likely a minus  ::)) is not unusual.

Come back any time if you need further help  :)

Monica

Hi John,

I think I can add to your story.

Mary Jane Whyte (1899 - 1957) was born Mary Jane Thomson to Alexander Thomson and Ellen (aka Helen) Chapman. Ellen Chapman was the sister of my great grand mother, Mary Jane Stevenson (nee Chapman, formerly Callaghan).

Mary Jane Thomson married Angus Wilson Whyte on 26/10/1928.

Hi Sarah,

You had me going there for a moment when I got the email notification :)

Fingers crossed John or some other distant cousin checks in.

Rather than start another thread, I'll add to Angus Wilson Whyte's "story"...

Angus married Christina McKechnie Simpson on 3 June 1921. She died on 10 December 1925 in the Glasgow Maternity Hospital.

Christina parents were David Simpson, Tramway car cleaner, and Christina McIlree.

Hi to all, I have managed to get back on site. Sharon, my apologies for the delay in replying to your post. I changed my service provider, thus my email address. I am not even sure if this will be accepted as when logging in, I have been told there is a problem with my login details.
