The Hotchkiss Family Assoication has lots of material on Sameul. See http://mysite. verizon.net/stuh/index.html) or http://hotchkissclan.org/gen/Records/INDIs/II4178.html. His brother John Hotchkiss married Alice benyon, one of half a dozen intermarriages between the two families. One of the Benyon/Hotchkiss marriages is an ancestor of mine, but I haven't quite succeeded in placing the Hotchkiss connection yet.

Hi

Not a lot of success for the original question, but I have found a number of Benyons' in the SPR, if either of you are interested.

Geoff, what is the SPR? I have about 1000 Benions in my tree so far all the way back to Wales in 1300. The tree might be wrong (it has a few assumptions) but it is the best I can make with the records available,

Hi John

It's the Shropshire Parish Registers (Whitcurch).

Wow! If you have that many Benyons' going back that far, you'll probably have them.

I notice you spelt it 'Benion' in your last post, is that a known variant of the line?

Geoff

I have some references from Whitchurch (my family I think came from Whixall which is nearby). There are numerous spellings of the name: Benyon (most since the mid 19th century), Benion, Bennion, Bennyon, Benyeon, Binnion etc. The name is Weslh from Ap Einion (son of Eninion). The founder of my line appears to be a Einion ap Rhirid from Bausley (on the Welsh/English border) in the 14th century. His descendants include three US Presidents, six generations of British MPs (the Benyons of Englesfield), Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York) and of course me. Ironically, my Benyon ancestor came to Australia as a convict, so we are one of the 'lesser branches'.

Yeah, certainly a very impressive lineage...

I seemed to recall (without checking) there was a Samuel Benyon, Vice Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, early 19c, not sure if he is in one of your lines though.

Samuel is in the family (his ancestors owned Ashe near Whitchurch) but not my direct line.
