Mackenzie of Gairloch
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 04:54 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the family of John Mackenzie, born in 1804 at Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty. His mother was Margaret daughter of John 'Mor' McKenzie and his father was John McKenzie b. c. 1768. I would like to find more information on these families.
Thank you,
DBC

Hi,

It looks like your John (son of John and Margaret MacKenzie) was baptised 5 MAY 1805 in Gairloch. If that's him they were from Melvaig and he had at least 2 brothers:

Murdoch baptised 10 SEP 1802 in Gairloch
Roderick baptised 28 MAR 1806 in Gairloch

There is a Murdoch MacKenzie (parents John and Margaret MacKenzie) that died 15 SEP 1894 in Lot 27, Melvaig, Gairloch. He was married to Annabella McRae.

Murdoch's marriage is not easy to identify as there are 2 records in Gairloch, and none identify parents:

24 JAN 1834 Murdo MacKenzie (from Inverewe) & Annabel McRae (Melvaig).
6 FEB 1834 Murdo MacKenzie & Annabella McRae, apparently both Melvaig.

In 1841 a couple Murdo/Anabel appear in Melvaig:

Murdo MacKenzie 35 Piper
Anabel 29
Margaret 7
Anabella 5

Your family could be related to another query about Mackenzies in Gairloch posted recently in this board. Those were also from Melvaig.

Cheers,
Kiko

Many thanks, Kiko. I'll check those out. I am having difficulty sorting out the various Johns and Margarets that crop up through the ages.
Regards,

Yes, be careful with some other John / Margaret MacKenzie couples that pop up in Gairloch. There are at least these other two marriages:

27 JUL 1810
31 JAN 1812

Looking at all the OPR's for births in Gairloch between 1800-1805, the only record for a John whose parents were John & Margaret is the one from Melvaig baptised 5 MAY 1805. I'm sending you a PM regarding this.

If that is your John, then he also had a sister called Margaret, baptised 1 JUN 1810 (not to be confused with another Margaret, same names for parents, baptised 17 MAY 1810). She married John Chisholm (probably 14 FEB 1831) and died 30 JUN 1895 in Melvaig.

Cheers,
Kiko

Hello kiko,

I have found a connection to Margaret McKenzie who married John Chisholm. Can you please clarify which is the correct birth for her in 1810? I have a list of possible siblings for Margaret
Colin 1822-1860
Kenneth 1825? 1900
Hector 1804-1877
Isabella 1812-1859
Murdo 1808-1894.

All except Colin died at Melvaig, seems he drowned in Loch Ewe. Also Hector married Isabella McRae (1802-1862) and Murdo married Annabella McRae (1809-1883), both daughters of Finlay McRae & Isabella McKenzie.

Cheers,

AMH

Hello Kiko,

I was thinking about these McKenzie's and think they must be 2 families. I know Colin and Kenneth are brothers as Kenneth was informant when Colin died. Also Hector & Murdo are brothers as Murdo was informant at Hector's death. But I don't think all 4 are brothers because of births of Hector & Murdo being too early.

Any thoughts you can add would be a great help.

Cheers,

AMH
