a query - what is the word between the names Charles Cullen and Ann Hill on the baptism record??

Olim - Latin meaning formerly so I think it would usually be before the mother's maiden name?

yes that would make sense

if you have the time (and inclination) at some point, could you take a look at this marriage - Mary Ann Atkinson 9 May 1895, Hobart - one of the witnesses is listed as "Millis Hill"
trying to work out if/how she fits in to the family (Mary Ann is the daughter of Mary HILL)

cheers!!
Lou

Hi Lou,

A Sarah Hill from Tasmania (born County Clare) was my great-grandmother. She met my great- grandfather in Tasmania. He arrived in Hobart in  August 1855 on the Wilhelmsberg. He (they?)left for New Zealand in 1863 and he and Sarah Hill married on January 10 1864 in Invercargill NZ. She died in NZ in 1916. I have a copy of one of her son's diary when he visited Tasmania in which he mentions "an aunt" there. I wonder if this Sarah Hill is the person you are looking for?

Hi Robyne
thanks for posting
that is looking quite promising!
do you have a copy of the marriage cert? then you could compare the signature with the one on the baptism record found by Mathew in reply #4 - there is a very distinctive capital 'H'
was the denomination RC?

regards
Lou

Hi Lou,

It's been a while so hope you are still there.  Sadly, I've been unable find any copies of Sarah HILL's actual signature so can't help there. Have you managed to uncover any further details since your last post about her? I can give you details of her spouse and children if that might help although you may have already accessed them. I do suspect our 2 Sarahs are one and the same as the dates seem to fit. Just wish we could find out more...

Best wishes,

Robyne

These two marriage records are images of the civil register. They were created by copying from the church register for St Josephs Launceston

HILL Mary   marr.  ATKINSON James Bernard   1857
https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/RGD37-1-16/RGD37-1-16P293

HILL JuLia   marr. O'LOUGHLAN   1861
https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Record/NamesIndex/862210

The original church register of marriages, St Josephs Launceston, which will be at Tas archives,  will have original signatures.

There will be no signatures for Mary HILL and Julia HILL. They do not sign.

Sarah HILL is literate, which might cause you to wonder if she is a sibling to Julia and Mary.

Is Ann HILL literate?.
