Andrew Siely B 1765 D 1859 Walcot Norfolk
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 11:04 BST (UK) »
Wife is related by marriage to Siely's in Tasmania that descend from Andrew Siely in  Walcot, Norfolk.
Freereg has done a very good job of transcribing the Parish Registers from North Walsham, Walcot and Happisburgh, and have sorted out Andrew's descendants reasonably well.

There are a lot of Siely's, that are probably related to Andrew, mentioned in the Registers from the 17th Century, but I can't work out how to relate them.

Has anyone done a Siely Tree from the area that goes back before Andrew Siely, and shows how they all connect ?

Would be interested to know if Andrew is related closely to the John Siely from Norwich at the time, who was a Surgoen, but had children baptised and married at North Walsham

I have a bit more information on the Siely family. I have two generations back from Andrew and I can confirm that John Siely, surgeon, was his brother. I'm still getting to grips with mapping the Siely family, but would be interested to know how your wife is related to Andrew.

Wow! Lot of water under the bridge since 2011 ! Actually, am no longer married to the person with the Siely connection. But anyway, still interested in Genealogy, and happy to help people trace their Family Tree.
So, the connection goes like this:
Andrew Siely 1765-1859 then Son James Cubitt Siely 1785-1862 then Son James Siely 1811-1888
the Son James Siely 1837-1908 who emigrated to Australia arriving on 1st April 1854 on the ship 'Golden Age" then Son Walter Siely 1862-1913 who was living at Kiama on the NSW South Coast when killed by his daughter ( Appears a rather nasty chappie and the jury let her off ! ) then
Charles E Siely 1887-1937 who moved to Tasmania and was completely different to his father and was a Police Hero when he saved a town just out of Hobart from a Bushfire. He is listed on the Police Honour Roll in Canberra. Then his Son James Henry Charles Siely 1912-1968 then my ex Wife's Brother in Law Brian Geoffrey Siely 1936-2014. He is survived by two Sons and a daughter who live in Hobart, all with children of their own.
Regards Mike ( See you got Brexit yesterday. Glad I'm in Australia these days ! )

Avrina, a very warm welcome to Rootschat.

I'd arrived at John as a possible brother via -

FindMyPast burial - John Siely, age 84, abode Stalham, date 29 Mar 1842 (calc. year of birth 1758)

History, Gazetteer and Directory, Norfolk, 1836
"Stalham, John Siely, Surgeon"

FindMyPast baptisms to parents John & Elizabeth Sillie
John, bap 19 Dec 1758, parish Aylsham,
Andrew, bap 29 Nov 1765, Walcot
Hannah, bap ? Nov 1770, Walcot
James, bap 1 Oct 1775

Is John, bap Aylsham the brother of Andrew, bap Walcot?

Firstly, to answer Mike - Yes, sorry, it was a bit of a long shot really, replying after so long. It’s only now though that I’ve had the time to spend on family history research, coupled with findmypast conveniently releasing lots of Norfolk parish records. One of the reasons I asked is that I had been in touch with someone in Australia before, who kindly sent me some information. However, now I’ve had a look at the parish registers, together with some wills, I’ve found their research to be inaccurate. It is very difficult with 5 brothers calling their sons the same names, but I think James born 1811 was the son of James and Martha. James Cubitt Siely was the son of Andrew Siely and Elizabeth Press and he only had one son, Frederick Thomas, who died age 25. I also thought I had census history for James born 1837 going up to 1901, although it’s difficult to be sure on that. The lady I was in touch with before (initials MS) had a different James Siely (born 1828) as the one emigrating and fathering Walter Siely.

Thanks for the welcome. I’ve been a member for quite some time, but never posted anything before. To answer your question, yes I believe so. There were 6 children in total: John 1758, Thomas 1760, Alexander 1762, Andrew 1765, Hannah 1770 and James 1775. They are all mentioned in the wills of both their father John Sillie and his bachelor brother Andrew Siely.

Thanks Avrina, will have a think and a bit more of a rummage around concerning James Cubitt Siely. The other person may be right concerning the James that came to Australia.

Avrina, well it is quite a while since I did the Siely Tree. And even then they were a bit of a conundrum. You probably have access to more data than I did, since I was only looking at what had been put up on the Internet at the time.
However in my Tree I have two James Cubitt Siely's
I have James Cubitt Siely 1785-1862 ( who was the Son of Andrew Siely 1765-1859 and Mary Cubitt 1765-1807 ). He is the one that I claim was the ancestor of the Australian link.
I also have a James Cubitt Siely b13 Aug 1815 d 14 Apr 1883 ( who was the Son of Andrew Siely and Andrew's second wife, Elizabeth Press ) and who married Mary Cubitt Houghton 1810-1854, and they are the ones who had the Son, Frederick Thomas 1842-1868.
Does seem a bit strange that you would name a Son with your second wife, exactly the same name as a Son with the Previous, but somehow I did find two James Cubitt's with what appear to be valid Birth and death Dates.
I have the first James Cubitt ( 1785-1862 ) as marrying Martha Gold on 22 Sept 1802 at St Mary's Church in Happisburgh. Then having their Son, James Siely, baptised in Happisburgh on 17 Mar 1811.
I have no James Siely's in my Tree that were born in 1828. The nearest is a James Siely baptised in East Ruston 13 Aug 1835. Then of course the one who came to Australia, and I have him being baptised at St Peter's Church in Ridlington 16 Oct 1837.
If you have any definitely verified data that disagrees with any of this, please let me know.
Regards
Mike
