1851 Census - Simms
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 11:38 BST (UK) »
Request lookup in the 1851 census for Mary Jane Simms thought to be born around 1839 in Uppingham.   She married George Woolman in Uppingham in 1858.   There is however a Mary Jane Simms birth registered 1838 Dec qtr, St Geo Southwark district.    Any help on the family greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the info.   The 1861 is definitely her.   The 1841 entry I'm not sure about as it puts her birth a little early at 1836 and I know in general the recorders in 1841 were accurate with children's ages.    Shame there's no mention of her in 1851.

Thanks Dave

There's not exactly a dynasty of Sims in Uppingham, so I'd be very sure it was her - age is frequently a couple of years out.

You have to ask is her parents statement of her age in 1841 more accurate than her own in later years - again lots of examples of this, esp if marrying a younger man ...

Curious as to how you know that kids ages were so accurate in 1841 - the Householders (parents) were responsible for completing the census schedules as in all years of the census. Mistrans' creep in for spelling during the copying process into the Enumerators Book (which is what we see online) - ages are less prone to this.

1851 I added - look again at the post above  :P

Unfortunately the IGI entries for Uppingham only go up to 1812 so you would need to find some on here with access to the actual PRs

If closely related to Mary Jane I think you need the Marriage Cert to confirm her Fathers name/occp.
There are various Family Trees but none seem to have the 1871 Census where Mary Jane has remarried;

1871 Census
Uppingham, Rutland
RG10/3301/83/19
Alfred JOYCE, 29, Head, Mar, born Bisbrooke, Rutland
MARY J, 29, Wife, Mar, born Uppingham
JOHN T, 11, Son, Scholar, born Uppingham
CHARLOTTE A, 9, Daug, Scholar, born East Langdon, Leicestershire
Sarah A, 6, Dau, Scholar, born Bisbrooke
Emilia, 4, Daug, born Uppingham
Henry, 2, Son, born Uppingham
By 1881 there are extra Children;
George
Mary A
Charles
Alfred is Widowed.

Cant find a Death Reg for her that fits!
Unless Mary J consistantly Marries younger Men and drops her age?

Marriage from FreeBMD;
Alfred JOYCE, Sept 1864, Uppingham, 7a 464
On the same page is Mary Jane WOOLMAN
