The Imperial Hotel
« on: Friday 24 June 11 00:14 BST (UK) »
I have in my collection of photos, one of my GGF,John Shepherd Marshall, standing outside a pub called The Imperial Hotel. His name is above the door as licencee and his wife is in the doorway. On the roof is a hoarding for Steel and Coulson Fine Edinburgh Ales.I think the photo must ahve been taken between 1911 and 1919 as his wife died in Dec 1919.
On all the census forms from 1881 to 1901 he was listed as a police constable for Durham Constabulary. On the 1911 form he is aged 55 and listed as a police pensioner and labourer in the colliery and living in Beech Tce South Moor.I know from his son's military record that in 1919 he was still living in Beech Tce.His wife is buried in South Moor.

I have attached the photo,it might help.

Does anyone know where the Imperial Hotel may have been.It is not the one in Stanley.Any help would be most grateful.

In the 1914 Durham Directory there were Imperial Hotels in Blackwellgate, Darlington; Union Alley, South Shields; Front Street, Stanley. There was also an Imperial Hotel in Newcastle. In the 1902 Durham Directory there is only the Imperial Hotel in Stanley listed. Why do you say it is not the one in Stanley, if he lived in South Moor.

There is a photo said to be of the Imperial Hotel at Stanley on the website http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_image_asp7digital_doc_id=1691

This does not seem to be the Imperial Hotel in the photo.

The records for the brewers Steel Coulson & Co Ltd are held by the Scottish Brewing Archive at Glasgow University and it may be worth while contacting the Archive to see if they can identify the hotel for you.

If you do a Google search for 'Steel Coulson & Co Ltd' you will fine the Scottish Brewing Archive and there is an enquiry form that you can download in .pdf form to make an enquiry.

In the 1911 Census there were two public houses on Front Street, South Moor, the Smith's Arms, landlord James Nicholson, and an unnamed one occupied by Richard Lumley, beer retailer. Not all public houses are listed in directories by name.
