I have tried the Scottish Brewing Records in Glasgow and they e maile back to say they only keep records of pubs from the middle 20th century. They suggest I try the licensing records as Stan mentioned.
Thanks again for all who helped,I will update if I discover anything

I am rather surprised that they have said that as the entry for Steel, Coulson & Co Ltd on the website of the Scottish Brewing Archive says that the creation dates for their records are 1888 - 1996 which suggests that they have earlier records than just from the middle of the 20th century.

Stan and fellow researchers,I contacted Durham Records Office re:the licence for the Imperial Hotel and they replied with the following:

Thank you for your e-mail of 03/07/2011.

I checked the trade directories that we have for that period, namely 1910, 1914 and 1921 but unfortunately could only find an Imperial Hotel at Stanley and South Shields. The former had the entry  'A.Higginbottom & Co. Limited, Front Street, Stanley'  for all 3 years. There is not a John Shepherd Marshall listed under the list of private residences in the area.

I have checked to see whether there are any licensing records for the petty sessional division covering Stanley but was unable to locate any surviving records.

We do not have any access to the 1911 census in this Office.

You may wish to check local newspapers for licensing notices.

But I did check Stan's reference to the link with Harvey Tce in Consett with a couple of trade directories at the library .I also had a suggestion from a Consett Facebook site that it may have been near the Carlton takeaway on Medomsley Rd.I have checked Google street view and if you head North away from the Duke of Wellington and find Joanne Christophers Hairdressers, there is a drivers training centre to the left of her shop.I am almost sure that this building was the Imperial Hotel. If you look at the roof line of the next building to the left the bityou can see on my picture matches almost exactly. What do you folks think?

I think that looks extremely promising.

I'm not too good at this, but I've tried to do cropped images of the left-hand side of the building and the one next-door 'then' and 'now' - they look very much the same to me.

The roof line looks the same with the position of the chimneys.

Thanks Jen and Stan,
I think we are in the right place. The ironic thing is the building to the left now belongs to Durham Council it is their Register office.I have e mailed them again to see if the Consett location is listed anywhere.

On the 1896-1897 1: 2,500 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html the Fountain Hotel is shown, there is a gap to the south then there is a P.H. marked, with no name. You can see the map if you put the coordinates 410953, 550976 in to search.
