It goes like that. Like a good gambler (as if I would know  ::)) you have to know when to say STOP (for now!) with SP  8)

I'll keep looking through the transcripts.

Thank you Monica you are very kind and I am extremely grateful for your help.  :)

I have downloaded the image for Malcolm on the census 1900 NJ from Family Search site.

The 1900 US census is one of the best to have as it is the one with most information  :)  Malcolm Snr. is still alive in 1930 and they look to have remained living in East Orange, Essex, New Jersey. Both daughters show as unmarried:

Malcolm Mackinnon 70, carpenter
Janet Mackinnon 70
Catherine Mackinnon 42
Flora Mackinnon 39

That's great Monica thanks.  :)  I'm still searching for a date of death for him.  Google throws up some McKinnons still in East Orange, NJ, interestingly.

A death date might be hard to find. I think he will be born too soon to be included on the SSDI (www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ssdi/search_ssdi.asp&clear_form=true). From experience of one, tracing a death in New Jersey can be complicated and hard to do  :-\ but hey, we are always optimists!

Hope this is not too late. I am fairly certain Neil MacKinnon was my great-grandfather, my grandmothers father. He married a Sarah Shirlaw in 1899 and is on the 1901 census but I could not trace him or his family anywhere on the 1911 census. He dies in 1918. He had 4 children - Margaret born around 1900, Catherine born 1902, Flora born around 1904 or 1905 and Archibald born 1909. They lived around the Glasgow area, Eastwood, Lanark and also on the south side of Glasgow. Flora was my grandmother but I cannot find her birth certificate although I could find certificates for all the other children. Flora marries my grandfather William Wilson in 1935, my dad (another William Wilson) being born in 1936. My Dad is an only child as am I. We did keep in touch with my grandmothers sisters and brother and their extended family when I was younger but have lost touch with them now. My grandmother was very proud of her MacKinnon ancestry and their connection to Mull.
