Headford Junction Ambush - 1921
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 07:01 BST (UK) »
In March 1921 the IRA ambushed a train carrying troops at Headford Junction in Kerry

My notes on the ambush are on this link

Headford Junction has now disappeared, as has the line south to Kenmare. This was the raison d'etre for Headford Junction - to change trains.

I am trying to get an idea of what Headford Junction was like, and although I have the old OS (see on my link) , modern satellite shots show it has all gone.

Newspaper reports at the time show that the "station master's house" played an important role in the ambush. I am trying to find clues to where that was - photos, plans or whatever

Don't know if this is any help and you may have it already.
Tans Terror and Troubles by T Ryle Dwyer (Kerry's fighting story  1913-23) refers to the Headford Junction ambush. The IRA "took up positions on both sides of the railway station" Tom McEllistrim was "in the station master's house with four men"  The stationmaster  Mr Walsh his wife and a guest were allowed to leave the house and "had got only 200 yards from the station when the shooting started"

Thanks, I do have that book and been through a number of books, but cannot find a picture of the original Headford Junction station

The link I have above to the old map, I have now annotated, as I think I have cracked what went on, but a photo from the period would prove or disprove by doodles
