You will find the following info on a business registration index along with other information, including the family's arrival on the EMMA in 1857, if you search here - copies the records can be purchased.
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexsearch/keyname.aspx

Thanks a bunch. Yes, my grandfather's full name was William John James Harold McNickle. He commonly went by Harold. Thanks a lot. I know he served in WWII, and this is almost certainly him. Thanks guys!

I venture to say the the father of Harold McNickle may be James Andrew McNickle, born in 1885. I say this because that would put him at 25 years old when my grandfather was born, and 43 when my grandfather's mother was killed by lightning in 1928.

Okay, I got it wrong. I guess it wasn't lightning, but electrocution from a vacuum cleaner. I know they didn't have surge protectors back in those days. I do know that Harold was the one that found her, and he was traumatized for the rest of his life.

You can purchase the service files from
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

They may make for interesting reading.  He enlisted three times and has three service numbers and a different next of kin each time.
