1861 lookup, please - William Attwater
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I think I've finally made a breakthrough thanks to Ancestry's free access to the National Probate Calendar.

There's a William Attwater (b1799) living in St. Pancras, Middlesex, London on the 1861 census (transcribed as Attwates on Ancestry). It would really help nail things if someone could please let me know where he was born and who he's living with.

Many thanks in advance
Les

Hi Haliared,
This family could be related to me.
I am wondering if you would be willing to share info with me.

As per above the 1841 census lists
William Attwater. age 40. Letter Sorter.
Ann (wife). age 40.
William. age 14.
Louisa. age 12.
Richard. age 8.

I am wondering if this William age 14 could possibly be the William Attwater that migrated to Australia. It will be my 3rd great grandfather if it is, as his age here suits.

I have his death cert but I believe the mother listed on it is incorrect so i only know that his father is William. Death certs says he was born "Rathbone Place, London"

Hope to hear from you
Brendan

Hi Brendan,
I cannot find out what happened to the son William ATTWATER so he could well be one who emigrated to Australia.
The problem I have is that there were 2 William ATTWATER's born in the same area at the same time so it is really difficult to work out which one is which.
The other William ATTWATER was at Norton Street, Marylebone, London, England in 1841.
One of these was imprisoned for stealing on 23 Sep 1845 at Clerkenwell Court, London, England, but I cannot currently find out which one this is.
The William ATTWATER born c.1826 who went to Australia I think could be the one who was on the vessel Omeo in Sep 1872, I think going from Victoria, Australia, the destination was Newcastle, New South Wales; Cleveland Bay, Queensland & Darwin, Northern Territory but this is just a transcription, if you can find the actual records of this it might help. This could be the William who was in court in Victoria, Australia in Apr 1859 when he was the defendant who had not paid someone for work done.
Please private message me if you find out anything or if you want further information about this family.
Best wishes, haliared
