Resources for Austria
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 21:20 BST (UK) »
I´d like to start some research into Austrian ancestry. Does anyone have any starting pointers for research in Austria? Are parish records still kept in the church or have they been centralized?

Thanks for that, is there anything else available on the internet? I´m in the unusual position (for me!) of being provided with a skeleton tree dating back many generations but would like to pat in out down the collateral lines and actually check that there are no untruths in there. I don´t know if anything was fabricated to please the Nazis at the time.

do you know a placename where are from the ancestors came?
and was it in PRESENT Austria?
some different at austrian states with archives. if you know a town or a state i can say more about which archive to contact or if you can ask directly at the parish-church also. some have given to central archives, but not every state the same.

Thank you for your help! I found out where the archives are held, also a beautiful "Heimat" book, confirming where my family lived over many generations. Problem solved :  )
