John Moore of Hillsborough - Looking for Moore Family Tree
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 11:08 BST (UK) »
Kia Ora

My irish ancestor was John Moore. This is the info I have on him so hopefully this might help

John Moore b.1825 Hillsborough County Down Northern Ireland  (11 miles south of Belfast) son of James and Hanah
his siblings were born in Dromore they were Sophia, Mary-Jayne,Margret,and Elizabeth
John came to NZ at the age of 16 and was part of the army stationed in the Northland region, and married Ngaraka Hauiti from Ngati Pikiao here. Ngaraka was living with a contingent of Ngati Pikiao along with many other from Te Arawa who were working the Northland gum feilds.
Ngaraka was baptised here with the name Miriam as she needed to have a European name in order to marry John (as required by the church of the day)

Hopefully someone will have afamily tree or help me find his ancestry going back further please get in contact with me if you have any information :)

Kind regards

Stephen

Moore, John       Townland: Cabra Year: 1830
Moore, William   Townland: Cabra Year: 1830
Thoughts;- HANAH could have been married here , her birthplace, went home for for first birth

the same for Dromore civil Parish
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/dromore-parish.php#.VdOMaEuDoYU

notes Growell Townland  is on the east side of the parish
Thoughts:- This could be James the father of your John

In 1863 in http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ there is a
Robert Moore living in Growell map ref 19, is this an older brother with 32 acres i.e. a farm and a house valued at £2  ten shillings , with a way above the average five shilling home

Ros davies has 3 small databases of Moore
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/
I'm stopping there as i have run out of time.

I think after exhausting Ros davies I would be exploring all Dromore and hillsborough  BMDS from church records

hoping others join in

Hi Ken.
I am new to this site. John Moore is my great great paternal grandfather. His photograph hangs on the wall with his wife our great great grandmother Ngaraka at Tapuaeharuru Marae in Rotorua. I want to learn more of our whanau whakapapa connections in Ireland.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Statutory birth, death and marriage registration started in Ireland in 1864, with non-RC marriages being recorded from 1845 onwards.

You obviously need to know the precise denomination, in order to search the correct records. Not all churches have records for that period and not all are on-line. You will also need an idea of location (parish if not actual townland).

PRONI (Belfast) has a guide that is an easy way to identify what churches are in a parish, what records exist for each church, the covering dates for each series of records (for example, baptisms, marriages, vestry minutes etc.) and their PRONI reference number.
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/Guide-to-Church-Records-October-2019.pdf

In addition, both GRO (Dublin) and GRONI (Belfast) have on-line search websites for birth, marriage and death records.

GRO (Dublin):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/news/154-update-to-the-civil-records-3
These records are free and, after ticking the Captcha box and entering details on the section 61 box, can be viewed and saved. Northern Ireland records only go up to the end of 1921.

GRONI (Belfast):
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/
You can register on GRONI (free) then purchase a few credits to do full searches, view certificates, etc. It costs £2.50 (5 credits) to let you see the digitised image of the original.

This is also a handy website to search for townlands, civil parishes and electoral divisions in Northern Ireland.
