Help with occupations please - Completed
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 22:47 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that someone can tell me what the occupations of the two fathers on this cert are, esp John Davies. The only info I have on him is, his son Henry was born in England. I got that from 1901/11 Scottish census forms. I've been trying for months now to find them & it might be easier if I at least had an occupation. I can't find them in SP records so assume that they are both English.
Any help will be gratefully received

Hi,

I'd say:

John DAVIES
Mason, deceased

Colin CAMPBELL
Mason

Thank you. I did think Colin Campbell said mason but was unsure if John Davies was the same. My son thought it might have been groom.

Hi  :)

I think the occupation  word  is practically identical in both cases - and the "M" is also like the "M" in Mary.

I see this is from a 1901 marriage of Henry, John & Elizabeth's son?
If we can help track them down, can you tell us where Henry or Elizabeth is in the Census 1901 (or earlier?). With a name like DAVIES, they could well be Welsh in origin too.

Colin CAMPBELL  sounds very scottish! What was his wife's maiden name?

Cheers

Hi
Henry is listed as a boarder at 316 Nuneaton St Glasgow although his name is written as Harris! & his wife is listed as Mary not Agnes. It is the same  address on his marriage cert though & his witness was a George Vallance who was the householder on the census form. Pretty sure it's the same person. It states place of birth as England as does the 1911 census from Auchinairn Rd Bishopbriggs & Cadder district. Have not been able to find Elizabeth even though she appears to be re-married to  ? McWhinnie. Can't find  John Davies marriage to Elizabeth Chorley either. As you can see, I'm not doing to well on this branch of the tree so far.
I have no experience at all on looking up English records as all mine so far have been Scottish (with a few Irish dead ends)
Thanks for looking

Hi Anne

Hmm, the CAMPBELL is more findable than the DAVIES - but is opening up a can of mystery !

Henry DAVIES wife - was on the marriage cert as Agnes Wardrop CAMPBELL?Which is how it's on the  Scotlands People 1901 marriage index, registered Bridgeton, Lanarkshire

I see from the 1901 census she was born abt 1882 Glasgow. On later birth certificates or even on her death certificate, does it say she is surname CAMPBELL? Or WARDROP?

It's is only a submitted record - but the IGI has the following:

Agnes Wardrop CAMPBELL b abt 1882 Glasgow
Father: Colin Campbell WARDROP, b abt 1857 Glasgow
Mother: Mary McTEAR, b 2 Mar 1877 Challoch Toll, Challoch, Wigtown
Parents married:  23 Nov 1877, Bridgeton, Glasgow
Noting:
1) Father's middle & surnames, same as daughter but transposed!
2) Mary was just over 8 months old when she married :-)
3) Mary's pob, which doesn't appear to match census (follows) - that's if the wife  in all the Census is Mary McTEAR....

Scotlands People - does index a marriage between
Colin Campbell WARDROP and Mary McTEAR in 1877 in Bridgeton, Glasgow

1881: 35 Reid Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Head: Colin CAMPBELL 23, Mason, b Stewarton, Ayr
Wife: Mary CAMPBELL 23, b Saltcoats, Ayr
Son: Colin CAMPBELL 2, b Glasgow

1891: 530 Baltic Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Head: Colin C WARDROP 33, Coal Merchant, b Stewarton, Ayr
Wife: Mary WARDROP 33, b Glasgow
Son: Colin 12, b Glasgow
Dau: Agnes 9,  b Glasgow
Dau: Janet 7, b Glasgow
Dau: Sarah 5, b Glasgow
Son: James 1, b Glasgow (may have died young)
Son: Gavin 5mths, b Glasgow

1901: 530 Baltic Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Head: Colin Campbell WARDROPS 44, Coal Merchant, b Stewarton, Ayr
Wife: Mary C WARDROPS 42
Son; Gavin C WARDROPS 10
Son: Robert C WARDROPS 8
Son: James C WARDROPS 6
Dau: Mary C WARDROPS 4
Son: Arthur C WARDROPS 3
Wife & children all b Glasgow - note all with middle initial "C".

IGI: Extracted record:
Colin WARDROPE b 19 Jun 1857, Stewarton, Ayr - mother Janet WARDROPE

IGI: Submitted record:
Colin Campbell WARDROPE b 19 Jun 1857, Stewarton, Ayr
Father: James DOUGLAS & mother Janet WARDROPE

Still trying to find Colin pre 1881 census.....

Cheers
