Welcome to Rootschat!

You don't give us much to go on! Looking for a needle in a haystack is child's play compared to looking for a John Smith in the early 1800s, without more information.

I can see a marriage of John Kilby and Jane Shelton in Ramsey in 1809, but not one for the other two, although you don't say whether they were married or not.

Give us a bit more background and I'll see what else I can find. Have you found any of these people in censuses or were they dead before 1841?

Ramsey seems to have been full of Kilbys. There's a burial of Jane Kilby age 77 on 11 Jan 1866 who might be your Jane. She appears in 1861 living in High St Ramsey, in what may have been an alms house, age 72, brickmaker's widow, born Ramsey. In 1851 at Stocken Fen, Ramsey was
Jane Kilby head widow 62 Brickmakers widow pauper
William Kilby son widower 38 Brickmaker
Robert Kilby grandson 11 scholar
All born Ramsey

And finally in 1841
Pond Green, Ramsey
John Kilsby 50 Brickmaker
Jane Kilsby 50
George Kilsby 20
All born in Hunts. In 1841 ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below, so 50 covered an age range of 50 to 54.

Found the marriage of John Smith and Rebecca Ellis - 1802 at Wistow, Hunts. I'll see what else I can find now.

David

I'd been gaily adding census details for Jane Kilby to my previous message, not realising you'd replied.

1851 census Wistow, Hunts
John Smith head marr 73 Ag lab b Upwood Hunts
Rebecca Smith wife 66 b Caxton, Cambridgeshire

In 1841 in Wistow were John Smith 55 and Rebecca Smith 50, both born in Hunts

In 1841 at Ramsey, living in the Chapman household were
Edward Smith 20 male servant
Mary Smith 20 female servant
Both b Hunts

I can't see Edward and Mary in the 1851 census.

The IGI at www.familysearch.org has a baptism at Caxton, Cambs of Rebecca Ellis, daughter of John and Rebecca, on 10 April 1785. Her baptism matches the age of Rebecca Smith in 1851, and the birthplace fits. Unfortunately the marriage in Wistow states that both were of this parish, rather than Rebecca of the parish of Caxton, which would have clinched it. But notwithstanding this, I think you're on pretty safe ground in assuming that this is the right Rebecca Ellis

John Ellis married Rebecca Cooper (you are indeed fortunate in having such an illustrious name as one of your ancestors!) on 18 Oct 1779 at Papworth Everard, Cambs (2 miles from Caxton)

www.freebmd.org.uk shows a marriage in the Dec quarter 1840 in Huntingdon registration district of Edward Smith and Mary Kilby

Unfortunately Hunts is not the easiest county to research online, as the LDS was refused permission to film many parish registers, hence they don't appear on the IGI or BVRI. Some have been transcribed by Hunts FHS however, including Ramsey (but not Upwood or Wistow)

Your best bet for pursuing the Hunts names is to purchase the Ramsey transcript from Hunts FHS, and to use the research service of Huntingdon Archives to follow the Upwood Smith family. The Ellis name from Cambs might be easier - I'll see if I can find more information on them

Hi David,
Edward and Mary traveled to Australia in about oct 1852 They became two of the four pioneers of the limestone plains the book about them was written in 1952 their son Shelton was my wife's ggrandfather and his sister married into the Cameron family (clan Cameron) her name was Annie Elizabeth thanks for the effort you have put in as you can see they were quite famous in Australia and there ancestry should not end  there  for a couple that could not read or write they did alright  Regards Terry :D
