Hi,

I'm fairly certain there was no canal anywhere near.  The nearest now is the Worcester & Birmingham canal, accessible from either Tardebigge or Kings Norton.  In 1917 the connection from the Dudley canals to the W & B, which joined near Bournville, was closed due to subsidence.

All these I guess are about 5 miles away from Whetty Lane.

I suppose your relative could have been harvesting wood from the Lickey Hills, or other woodland.  I'm guessing you need a good hardwood for making a barge.  Try the 1873 land tax records for Worcestershire here http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/cgi-bin/DB/search.cgi?action=loadDB&DB=1 for possible land ownership.

Have you found your man in the 1951/1871?  What does that say?

You could try looking for his business in a commercial directory.  Leicester university run a site to put some on line http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Jackie,

Have you tried the London Gazette for bankruptcy details?  http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/

It's also good for military awards and officer promotions.  If you are Worcestershire based and have a library ticket you can use The Times on-line archive for free.  Our website has an access point. Let me know if you need it.  Other libraries may have a similar scheme.

"The earliest references to Rubery are  to be found in 16th Century Deeds and  plans, indicating the quarry ridge at  the north-east end of the village as   "Roughberrow" (Rough Hill) or Rowberrie.
The small group of buildings a mile to the south-west was "The Whetty"....

Worcester Journal, 17 Mar 1894 "There were fourteen applicants for allotments at the Whetty and nine for Rubery and Frankley"

Old-maps       www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html
coordinates are  398268    276912
The 1904 map identifies the "Allotment Gardens" (and the Plough, also at "the Whetty", from an earlier post).
