Home for Waifs and Strays - Dublin - Mountjoy Square
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 05:31 BST (UK) »
My great uncle was born in 1896 and was a ward of this orphanage.  He was sent to Canada when he was 10 years old with other Barnardo boys.  Does anyone know where the records for this orphanage exist?  It was run by the Reverend Gage-Dougherty.  His name was William Walter Ruddy.  Hoping someone can help me!!

I dont see any orphanage on Mountjoy Square in Thom's 1894, 1899, 1904 or 1914...

There is an orphanage (St. Joseph's) listed at Mountjoy Street, but it's for girls..

Also on Mountjoy Square are several schools, a 'Distressed Irish Ladies Home" at number 38 (East)

dont know if this might be connected but there was a query on another forum about a possible orphanage in the same area - but at a later date :

  Thom's 1938

  39 Mountjoy Square (South),
  St. Patrick's Infant Aid Soc.

in 1914 Rev John Olphert Gage Dougherty M.A. is listed as the incumbant at the Rotunda Hospital, which was a chapel of ease to the Church of Ireland parish of St. Mary. At the time he lived at 39 Rutland Square North (now Parnell Square)

here's the Reverend on the 1911 census - Dougherty household
