I think they probably have just misspelt or misheard it  Armor / Hamer sounds similar

Do you know for certain that John William's mother Maria was born 1887 Stafford?

Ithink in 1911 census (though i haven't seen the full form ) that Thomas may have lived under the name of Collins .There is a JOHN COLLINS AGE 6 B 1905 LIVING DONCASTER YORKSHIRE WEST RIDING.
Though I can,t seem to configure either Mary or an Elijah in the same place!

I would suggest a search of the  1911 Census:
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?4

By putting in John William HAMER in the "other Persons in the Household" fields in Advanced Search.
And just the surname COLLINS in the top, main surname field.

And see what transpires - who is in the house and where.
Then switch it round, ie: put the name of one of the  as-enumerated COLLINS member of the house (as found in above search) in the "other Persons in the Household", and just HAMER in the top main surname field......

Then I would put the names found into an alternative site's search, one by one, exact years of birth (as indicated in the first search above) at:
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?4
The results of this alternate search will provide enumerated places of birth.

Darren, if you could do this and post up the results, it might clarify some things for us  ;) We can't do lookups in 1911 ourselves - but we can help you use the tools to search for yourself.

Cheers

The 1914 death of an Elijah COLLINS in Doncaster does seem very likely to be him - age is right, matches the son of an Elijah COLLINS & Elizabeth (nee BULLOCK) from Bloxwich.

With the COLLINS births after this date, mms HAMER - if the mother here is Maria, there are some possible explanations for this, if Maria's husband Elijah was indeed deceased well before these children were concieved......

COLLINS was Maria's legal name. Children born to her after the death of her husband, while she was a widow - would/should be registered as COLLINS, mms HAMER?  Their birth certtificates may not show a father's name.

In this were the case, then perhaps she was together with John MARGISON, well before they married in 1918 - and there was some impediment to their marriage prior - ie: he already had a living spouse,  or something to do with WW1's intervention?

Just an idea....!

Was pleek road the correct spelling as I've not heard of it. I've heard of something similar such as pleck road but in respect to bloxwich it would be more likely Walsall.
