I have typed up page 3 and 4 of the Burial register that lists a few extra members of the Rotorua Cemetery community from 1885 and 1886, and would like to add it to this thread if that's okay with spades.

Would someone care to check what I have transcribed first?   If so, PM me your email.

taonga1, I have also followed up via email with the sexton to see if he has located Herr Lechner yet.  Will keep you posted.

And yes, discovering an unmarked grave does put one in an interesting position, especially where there are no direct descendants known to you (yet).

Beg, thanks for your encouragement.  :)

That was my concern.  Everything else has been entered into their database and there is nothing on their website, here: http://www.rootschat.com/links/0elr/ , or here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0els/ except the statement that they will be adding to the records in the coming months (whenever that was put up).

So I am fairly content that posting the information on the 2 pages that I managed to photograph is in line with their intentions and therefore doesn't breach copyright.

spades checked with the Copyright Editor here and I have the go ahead to post the information that I transcribed from the two pages that were photographed from the Rotorua burial register.

Unfortunately no one came forward to proof the transcription, so there may be some unintentional errors.

I am going to try and attach it as a png, but list the names here for search engines:

I found the Tarawera eruption fatalities interesting from an historic perspective, and have found a few newspaper articles about BAINBRIDGE and the HA(S)ZARD family.  I am left wondering what happened to Ina HASZARD.

Ina Haszard went on to marry:
1899/4581   Ina Jane   Harzard   Arthur Edward   Hobbs

and tell her story about the eruption

Had at least one daughter; and was a painter.  She also wrote a book.

Apparently Mrs Haszard and another daughter also survived.

Here is a list of  some survivors and fatalities:

Unfortunately the sexton hasn't come back to me, despite follow-up emails, with regards to the plot where Herr Lechner is buried.  Sorry taonga1.  Will close the thread and if I get a reply will PM you directly.

William Johannes Theodore Lechner was the first editor of the Hot Lakes Chronicle. He died a pauper in 1886 and his friends took up a collection to mark his grave with a headstone. The person taking up the collection purchased a white wooden cross that was over the grave of a tourist, Mr Bainbridge, who died in the Tarawera eruption, and I understand had not accounted for the rest of the money by 1888.  William Theodore had worked on the Bruce Herald for two years. Ref. Bruce Herald, 23.3. 1888 -Mr T. Lechner. He was my gt,gt grandfather.

Theodore Lechner was buried in the old cemetery. A collection was taken up for a headstone but the ones responsible eventually purchased a wooden cross erected over a Mr Bainbridge -the only English tourist buried after the Tarawea eruption.I guess they thought his family would never find out. This cross had been standing there for eighteen months when they bought it.   They hadn''t accounted for the money remaining two years later. See Bruce Herald 23.3.1888 Papers Past.

I am a gt gt granddaughter, at present trying to research his life for the family. Would love to contact other descendants. I have a copy of a history by  Douglas Lechner
