Sulley family from Arnold - Nottinghamshire.
« on: Tuesday 09 August 11 17:22 BST (UK) »
Hello, I've heard that any sulley families in the uk either come from the french family or the welsh family, both from towns called Sully, but in different countries.

I come from the popular Sulley family from Arnold, Nottinghamshire. I was just wondering if anyone had done any more research into their backgrounds, or if anyone would like to help me find some.
Are any of you related to a Sulley? Have any of you heard of the Sulleys, or maybe you live in Arnold and know quite abit about them?

I would love to visit there at some point as i know there are many Sulleys buried in a cematery.
If any one has any info on the Sulley surname or family i would love to hear it.

Thank you.

There are 43 burials for the name SULLEY at Arnold (The Kings Church) between 1680-1855,
and oddly enough the 2004/5 Electoral Rolls also lists 43 with the Sulley name.
PM me if you require details.

Hi, thanks for replying.

On the Sulley side i have gone as far back as Henry Sulley born in 1658 and died in 1725.
the other people in my family are:
Thomas Sulley 1682-1743
Thomas "      " 1720-1787
John      "      " 1751- 1814
William  "      " 1791-1851
George "       " 1826- unknown death.

I also have a Trueman family, Rebecca Trueman married John Sulley, mentioned up there. They were known in Nottinghamshire but im just curious to know if there are many of them there.

Does anybody know the origin of the Arnold Sulleys? Or does anyone know how i can find out?

thank you.

According to the FHS disc, there were Sulley baptisms at Arnold going right back into the 1500s.

However I can't see a Henry b 1658 in Arnold though; there is a 1621 baptism for Henry and another in 1687. Acctually the disc has a gap in Sulley baptisms between 1626 - 1682 in Arnold - How frustrating!! There's a gap in marriages between 1641 and 1704

Bapt 14.11.1682 Thomas Sulley p's Henrie and Anne  (other siblings were William 1684, Henrye 1687, Anne 1689, Alse 1692, Anne 1698)

This marriage may be relevant:

1681 09 24   Henery   SULLEY   Anne   PECK     NOTTINGHAM St Peter

then there's this burial

1693 11 17   Anne   SULLEY   Arnold   Wife of Hen.   ARNOLD St Mary

followed by another marriage of potential interest:

1696 12 08   HenerySULLEY   Ann   DEVERALL     NOTTINGHAM St Nicholas
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Hi

Not sure if you are interested in the more recent Sulleys but there are lots buried at Redhill Cemetery.

There are also quite a few buried at the Rock Cemetery Nottingham.

I am descended from Thomas Sulley 1720 through his son Richard. I have some information on this family if you are interested. I can't help with your enquiry about where the Sulleys came from.
