Geography - nightmare family !!
« on: Saturday 20 August 11 18:22 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandmother was Eliza Thompson.  This is the surname shown on all the BC's of her children.  However, prior to this, it varied between Thomlinson, Tomlinson, Tompson .. and so on.

I have NEVER been able to find the birth for her, as the census records always indicated she was born in Brynmawr.

I have her on the 1871 census, and her POB is shown as: Llangotte, Brecknockshire, Wales.

They are in the sub-registration district of Llangattocl, and handwritten at the top of the census is "Brynmawr"

sooooo ... I checked Breconshire for possible births, and up popped "Eliza Tomlinson" December quarter 1866 in Crickhowell.  Would this tally for Brynmawr do you know please?

Thanks oodles :)

The marriage for her Parents (William TOMSON & Ann LEEK) is also shown as Crickhowell, September qtr 1856.  I would like to get the certificates, but that could be a costly mistake if the registration district isn't right .....

the following gives the palces and dates within the registration district of Crickhowell
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/crickhowell.html

Brynmawr however was not part of Crickhowell R/D until 1900.

Thanks Mike.  This is confusing somewhat, as Brynmawr has been written at the top of the page on the 1871 census return.  It is Langattock, Registration District-Crickhowell.  It looks like King Street.

What it says on the top of the page is:
Civil Parish: Llangattock
Town: Brynmawr
Local Board: Brynmawr
Ecclesiatical District: Llangattock
Registration District: Crickhowell
Sub-District: Llangattock

If you read the link re places and dates for Crickhowell Registration District, it clearly states:

Llangattock
From 1837 until 1889 in Brecknockshire.
In 1889 the parts of the parish of Llangattock in the urban districts of Brynmawr and Ebbw Vale were transferred from Brecknockshire to Monmouthshire, in 1894 these areas became the separate parishes of Llangattock Brynmawr and Beaufort respectively, so that thereafter Llangattock was again wholly in Brecknockshire.

Brymawr is/was treated separately
From 1900 until 1974
Created 1.10.1900 from the parishes of Llanelly Brynmawr Urban, Llangattock Brynmawr Urban, and Aberystruth Brynmawr Urban.
Those 3 parishes were only created in 1894.

Registration Districts consisted of sub-districts, and these consisted of parishes.
The actual town was almost immaterial! ;D ;D

Thank you for all that little lot :)

it was hand written on top of the originally completed census ....

it is too much of a coincidence that these are not mine ... the 2 marriages are registered for Crickhowell, yet I know they lived in Brynmawr, and their children were born there.

As I've really nothing more to go on, I've ordered it ..... fingers crossed. :-\
