Markham - County Clare
« on: Monday 22 August 11 21:20 BST (UK) »
I am looking into the Irish roots in my family, have made a start with one side and am now going to make a start with this.  Just after some help/advice on how to go about this.

Am looking for a Mary Ann Markham born about 1831.  I can see from census she was born in County Clare, on the 1851 it is transcribed as CT Mease but when I look at the census it says County Clare and then what looks like Inease which I am wondering if should be Ennis?

Mary is a servant on this census not living with any family.  On later census she is married to Joseph Haven, no family members as clues!

How can I go about finding her birth/baptism?  I am visiting my Mom next week in County Cork and was hoping to be able to visit the place Mary came from, just to have a look.

Mary Ann's birth is well before the start of full civil registration in Ireland (1864) so you would need to check for parish records to find details for her and her family. To start this you first need to know the family religion and where they lived at the time, i.e. which parish, so you can check what records (if any) are available.

For details of records available in the county see the resources topic at the top of the Clare board and also :

Hi
Sorry, have been on holiday.  Mary was in Birmingham on the 1851 census as a servant aged 19.
Thanks

Had a look at the 1851 census - Mary's place of birth looks like 'Mease' to me..  The enumerator has the same type of flourish on other M's on the page.

I cant think of any town in county Clare that sounds anything like Mease though.. so presume it's a mishearing or mistranscription.

Have you found Mary on the later census returns ?

Hi, I have found her on later census when she is married to Joseph Haven.  Still in Birmingham.  The 1861 census says born in Liverpool then the 71 says county clare again.  Very confused!!

Do you have the name and occupation of Mary's father from her marriage record ?

Unfortunately, I can't find a marriage record for her.  Well, I haven't found a cert or church record but have not checked the catholic records in Birmingham.  Need to find out more about these records as not available in the record office.
